About Arene
Arene's mission is to provide Toyota and its partner companies with hardware-independent software that supports next-generation vehicles and can be updated to support new features at any time.
Currently, we are recruiting multiple tooling software engineer interns. Interns will be assigned to one of several teams. The specific team will be determined during the hiring process. Potential teams include:
- Team 1: Test Systems (Tokyo, Japan)
- Team 2: Simulation (Tokyo, Japan)
- Team 3: Online Services (Tokyo, Japan)
Regardless of the assigned team, interns will gain practical experience by collaborating with various groups and contribute to projects shaping the future of Toyota's software ecosystem.
Team Information
Team 1: Test Systems (Internship Location: Tokyo, Japan)
The Test Systems tooling team collaborates across Japan and the United States as part of the broader Arene Engineering function. While multiple teams focus on software stacks, test automation, and end-user infrastructure, another team provides the infrastructure (cloud / on-premises / hardware) that underpins large-scale, resilient, and maintainable test execution. By working together, these global teams aim to ensure a unified, robust, and scalable vehicle software verification experience for Arene, whether tests are run from a laptop, cloud, or hardware bench.
Team 2: Simulation (Internship Location: Tokyo, Japan)
The Arene Simulation team helps developers test in-car applications early without using actual vehicles, supporting cost reduction and safety enhancement. To do this, we work closely with users and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) developers to provide a highly customizable simulation engine that emulates sensors and ground truth data for the test vehicle and its virtual environment. Our solution runs closed-loop simulations using external AS systems, recreating driving scenarios in a 3D virtual world based on detailed vehicle dynamics.
Team 3: Online Services (Internship Location: Tokyo, Japan)
The Online Services team is responsible for the cloud-based portion of Arene, from the infrastructure of the foundational layer to the top-level services. We develop web applications that allow external Arene users to access all end-user products. We work closely with other engineering teams to collaborate on cross-domain functions and create an atmosphere that values inclusion and diversity. We welcome challenges and drive innovation from the ground up to ensure a satisfactory experience for our customers.
Desired Profile
We are seeking tooling software engineer interns to join Arene in the development and improvement of tooling platforms such as related systems. These platforms are used by Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) and partner teams and support large-scale, safety-critical in-car software development in our global engineering organization.
As part of Arene's external tooling initiatives, you will help provide solutions that enable TMC engineers to efficiently model, simulate, verify, and integrate complex vehicle software. You will gain practical experience with large codebases, distributed development environments, and cross-team collaboration at an enterprise scale.
Job Responsibilities
- Assist in the design, implementation, and maintenance of tooling for related platforms used in the TMC workflow
- Develop automation, verification, and integration features that comply with the needs of safety-critical automotive development
- Support CI/CD pipelines and build processes for large, multi-team projects
- Collaborate with Toyota Motor Corporation's engineering teams to gather requirements and align tools with actual development scenarios
- Support the improvement of developer CLI tools and GUIs that interact with Arene's ecosystem
- Participate in debugging and troubleshooting tooling issues reported by external teams
- Contribute to the creation of technical documentation and onboarding materials for TMC engineers using the tools
Required Skills
- Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science or a related field
- Experience with one or more scripting languages: C++, Go, Rust, Java, Kotlin
- Experience with cloud-based development environments (AWS, GCP, Azure)
- Understanding of version control systems (e.g., Git)
- Interest and curiosity in improving developer productivity, automation, and engineering workflows
- Business-level English proficiency
Preferred Skills
- Experience with developer CLI tools or CI/CD pipeline automation
- Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform) and containerization (Docker)
- Interest in collaborating across multiple teams and managing large codebases
- Basic knowledge of automotive or safety-critical software development
- Japanese language proficiency
