About the Position

Ausbildung Fachinformatiker Anwendungsentwicklung

We are looking for a motivated individual to join menten GmbH as an Ausbildung Fachinformatiker Anwendungsentwicklung. This is a full-time apprenticeship where you will learn Java, SQL, and more, working on real projects.

Responsibilities

Write Java code that runs in production, from small features to entire modules
Work with Claude Code as a team AI, no special tasks
Participate in code reviews with the senior team: explain your solutions, ask questions, learn
Connect databases (PostgreSQL, MSSQL) and build interfaces
Create tickets in Jira, understand requirements, document solutions in Confluence
From the second year, you will accompany your own features from idea to production operation

Typical Week. Two days of vocational school at Joseph-DuMont-Berufskolleg Köln (block form), the other days in the team in Bergisch Gladbach. Mon code review with a mentor, Tue and Wed on your own ticket, Thu pair programming or documentation, Fri weekly review. From the 2nd year, one day of home office per week, later more.

What You Will Learn

1st Year

Java basics in production, Git workflow, IntelliJ, SQL basics, first bug fixes

2nd Year

Spring Boot, REST APIs, Test-Driven Development with JUnit, own small features

3rd Year

Participation in architecture, own feature from conception to production release, preparation for final exam

Requirements

Abitur or vocational high school diploma
Initial programming experience in Java, Python, JavaScript, or similar, whether from school, gaming mods, or personal projects
Solid German and English skills, documentation is often in English
Passion for logical problems, you don't give up at the first stack trace

Skillset

You independently work through new topics and ask questions before you fully understand
Logical thinking is your tool, creative solutions your drive
You enjoy working in a team and actively seek help instead of struggling alone for two days
You document what you do because you will look it up again in three months
