The Controls HMI Engineer designs, develops, tests, deploys, and commissions industrial human-machine interface (HMI) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) solutions for automated material handling and parcel logistics systems. The role applies HMI/SCADA, PLC integration, industrial networking, database connectivity, and visualization expertise to deliver safe, reliable, maintainable, and operator-focused systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, configure, test, deploy, and commission HMI and SCADA applications for material handling, sortation, warehouse automation, and parcel logistics systems in accordance with project specifications and customer requirements.
  • Develop and maintain reusable graphic libraries, equipment faceplates, navigation structures, templates, and scripts. Create operator displays, system overviews, diagnostics, alarm summaries, trends, reports, and maintenance interfaces using consistent engineering practices.
  • Translate customer standards, sequences of operation, control narratives, electrical drawings, and functional requirements into maintainable HMI/SCADA designs and testable software deliverables.
  • Integrate HMI/SCADA applications with PLCs, OPC UA servers, industrial databases, historians, reporting tools, and warehouse control or execution systems to support reliable data exchange and system operation.
  • Support emulation, simulation, virtual commissioning, factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and performance validation to verify system functionality and compliance with project requirements.
  • Diagnose and resolve HMI/SCADA, PLC communication, industrial network, database, alarm, scripting, and visualization issues. Collaborate with controls, electrical, mechanical, software, commissioning, project management, installation, and customer teams to achieve project objectives.
  • Provide technical guidance and knowledge transfer to engineering, commissioning, operations, and maintenance personnel. Implement appropriate industrial cybersecurity and access-control practices in accordance with project, customer, and information security requirements.
  • Travel up to 40% of the year, including short-duration assignments and multiple 10/4 rotations, based on project requirements. Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline required. Five (5) years of experience developing, commissioning, or supporting industrial automation, HMI, or SCADA systems required; material handling or related industry experience preferred. A master’s degree in a related field may be considered in lieu of experience.
  • Experience developing industrial HMI/SCADA applications for automated material handling systems using Rockwell Automation FactoryTalk View SE/ME; Siemens WinCC Professional, WinCC Unified, and HMI Comfort Panels within TIA Portal; Inductive Automation Ignition Vision/Perspective; AVEVA System Platform and InTouch HMI; or comparable platforms.
  • Experience using PLC software and knowledge of EtherNet/IP, PROFIBUS, PROFINET, managed industrial switches, and Layer 2/Layer 3 network fundamentals.
  • Experience with SQL databases, historians, scripting, data logging, reporting, and system interfaces preferred. Knowledge of version control, release management, backup and recovery, emulation, simulation, virtual commissioning, and software validation methodologies.
  • Ability to develop and interpret functional specifications, sequences of operation, control narratives, electrical schematics, network architecture drawings, and software design documentation. Knowledge of high-performance HMI design, alarm management, industrial cybersecurity, and applicable OSHA, NFPA 70E, ANSI, ISA, electrical, and machine-safety requirements.
  • Experience diagnosing and resolving issues across integrated automation systems, including HMIs, PLCs, scanners, variable frequency drives (VFDs), servo systems, safety controllers, distributed I/O, and industrial networks.
  • Ability to lead HMI/SCADA work packages, coordinate technical activities on complex material handling, parcel, or warehouse automation projects, conduct peer reviews, mentor engineers, and collaborate effectively in a matrixed project environment. Excellent written, verbal, presentation, interpersonal, and customer-service skills required.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality technical solutions within established project schedules and budgets.

We Offer

  • Flexible work environment that supports your work-life balance; we offer paid time off for parental leave and 22+ days off for personal time and holidays.
  • Access to medical, dental, and vision insurance plans with FSA or HSA options, and a 401(k) plan with a company match up to six percent.
