Join us in making a difference
As a Data Engineer in our Core Data Engineering team, you will build and maintain the data pipelines, models, and validations that turn raw data into trusted information for the whole company. Working with tools like BigQuery and Airflow, our team owns some of trivago’s most critical datasets, so analysts, data scientists, and product teams can find, trust, and use data with confidence. Our core session-level dataset powers decisions across trivago, and it has grown into a complex system that needs rethinking. You will have the freedom to redesign it, challenge the status quo, and push back on requests when you can offer a better way to meet the need. trivago is a place where ambition and support go hand in hand: we hold high standards and genuinely invest in each other’s growth. Apply and tell us about something you changed that nobody asked you to.
Responsibilities
- Develop data pipelines and data aggregations, including the core session-level dataset that teams across trivago rely on every day.
- Analyze existing and new data sets to understand what data consumers need.
- Build data models that make data easy to use for teams across the company.
- Optimize large-scale data processing jobs and automate workflows with scheduling tools.
- Develop data validations that protect data quality.
- Align deliverables with project team members, proactively pick up tasks from the team’s backlog, and document your work so others can build on it.
Requirements
- Hands-on experience building and maintaining data pipelines and data models, ideally with Python, SQL, and a workflow scheduler such as Airflow.
- Ownership beyond the task list: you spot problems nobody assigned to you, diagnose root causes, and come back with a proposed redesign, not just a ticket.
- Strong written and verbal communication, including the confidence to challenge a request and bring a better alternative that still meets the underlying need.
- A genuine learning mindset: you approach challenges with curiosity, seek out feedback, and continuously look for ways to develop and grow.
- A performance mindset: you set ambitious goals for yourself, bring bold ideas to the table even when they challenge how things have always been done, and have the determination and resilience to follow through and make them real.
- An open and curious mindset toward AI tools and automation: you actively explore how AI can enhance your engineering work and are excited to grow alongside evolving technologies.
Nice to Have
- An understanding of how web APIs and backend services work.
- Experience building AI-powered automations that take repetitive engineering work off a team, such as triaging pipeline alerts or investigating failures.
We Offer
- Personalized coaching through Nilo and access to workshops, educational meetups, conferences, free online learning courses, and a fully-equipped campus library.
- Enjoy your office days: Use your daily canteen budget to share lunch with colleagues, complimentary snacks and drinks, on-site gym, sports classes, Urban Sports Club membership, ergonomic desks, and focused work areas.
- Moving to join us? Visa support, relocation package, interest-free newcomer loan, free language classes, regular team and company-wide events.
- Life happens: Self-determined vacation (minimum of 25 vacation days), flexible working hours, up to 2 work from home days weekly, remote work options within Germany or selected countries abroad for up to 20 days per year, free access to the Heycare platform for personalized nanny assistance, and an on-campus kids room.
Thank you for considering a career at trivago! Our commitment to fostering an inclusive and enriching environment for all talents is at the heart of what we do. We understand that embarking on a new job opportunity is a blend of excitement and curiosity. Should any questions arise before you apply, feel free to reach out to us at [email protected]. Join us in our mission to make a positive impact on global travel, we look forward to your application!*
