About the Position
We are seeking a Database Administrator (MS SQL DBA) to join our 24x7 follow-the-sun operations team, ensuring stable and efficient day-to-day operations of MS SQL Server databases across production and non-production environments. The role focuses on maintaining database availability, performance, security, and reliability while handling L2-level incidents, service requests, health checks, and routine maintenance tasks. Occasional weekend and rare holiday coverage is required, typically once per month.
Responsibilities
- Monitor SQL Server database performance, availability, space usage, and scheduled jobs (SQL Agent Jobs)
- Respond to alerts, troubleshoot L2-level incidents, and escalate critical issues when needed
- Manage user access, roles, permissions, and support audit/compliance requirements
- Support installation, configuration, database creation, restoration, and refresh activities
- Perform regular backup checks and assist with restore tests and DR exercises
- Help developers with database object creation (tables, indexes, stored procedures, views)
- Analyze slow-running queries using execution plans and basic performance tools
- Maintain operational documents including SOPs, runbooks, and configuration records
- Assist with deployments, release validations, and implementing DB changes
- Contribute to automation initiatives and suggest operational improvements
- Provide 24×7 rotational on-call support as required
Requirements
- 4–6 years of hands-on experience as an MS SQL DBA
- Understanding of MS SQL Server architecture, storage structures, and indexing
- Experience with backup/restore using native SQL Server backups (full/diff/log)
- Knowledge of SQL Agent jobs, Alerts, and basic performance tuning using DMVs
- Familiarity with AlwaysOn basics (read-only routing, health monitoring)
- Working knowledge of T-SQL and basic scripting
- Skills in basic Windows Server administration
- Basic knowledge of at least one RDBMS: Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, or MongoDB
- Strong analytical and communication skills
Nice to Have
- Exposure to AlwaysOn Availability Groups and Failover Cluster Instances
- Background in patching, cumulative updates, and upgrade activities
- Familiarity with monitoring tools (SolarWinds, SCOM, Dynatrace, Redgate)
- Experience with cloud database services (Azure SQL DB, Azure Managed Instance, AWS RDS for SQL Server, GCP)
- Proficiency in scripting with PowerShell for automation
- Microsoft MCSA/MCSE or DP-series
