About the Position

Datacenter Engineer (w/m/d) - RZ Standort Heiligenhaus

Yorizon GmbH & Co. KG (DE) is seeking a Datacenter Engineer to join our team in Heiligenhaus, NRW. This role is pivotal in building and maintaining our sustainable cloud infrastructure.

About Us

At Yorizon GmbH & Co. KG, we are pioneers in sustainable Green-IT-Cloud-Computing solutions. Our focus is on digital sovereignty, security according to European standards, and independence and flexibility through the use of open-source technologies.

Open Source is our DNA: We actively engage in open-source associations, networks, and collaborations to shape open standards and promote Europe's digital sovereignty with innovative IT solutions. Our mission is to support companies of all sizes in accelerating their digital transformation and achieving their business goals through the use of sustainable cloud technologies.

Start-up-Spirit meets Corporate Power: Yorizon is a subsidiary of HOCHTIEF, a technically oriented global infrastructure corporation with leading positions in its core activities of construction, services, and concessions/public-private partnerships (PPP) with a focus on Australia, North America, and Europe. We combine agile pioneering spirit and flat hierarchies with the stability of an international corporation.

Your Role

Our cloud runs on hardware that someone has screwed into the rack, wired, and put into operation. This is your role: As a Datacenter Engineer, you are our on-site expert. You equip our data centers with technology, keep them running, and are the hands in the data center when the platform team cannot help from a distance.

Your location is our data center site in Heiligenhaus, North Rhine-Westphalia. We are starting in NRW and will grow in the coming years at other locations in Germany – you will be there from the beginning: with empty racks, the first servers, and everything that arises from it.

Your Responsibilities

  • Commissioning Hardware: You install servers, storage systems, and network components in the racks, neatly wire them (copper and fiber), label, document, and commission them – from delivery to productive system.
  • Operating and Troubleshooting: Faulty disks, failed power supplies, memory errors, link problems – you recognize hardware faults, replace components, handle RMA cases with manufacturers, and keep an eye on the lifecycle of our devices.
  • Utilizing Remote Management: Using BMC, IPMI, iDRAC, or Redfish, you bring systems back online remotely, load firmware, and automate recurring tasks.
  • Taking Over Basic Provisioning: You automatically bring operating systems to new machines (PXE, Netboot, Images), check them, and hand over ready-to-use systems to our platform team.
  • Maintaining Inventory and Documentation: You keep our inventory and cabling documentation neat so that the entire team can rely on it.
  • Growing into the Cloud Platform: When there is a lull in the data center, you support our team in deploying and operating the cloud environment (OpenStack, Ceph, Kubernetes) based on your interest and knowledge. We are happy to show you how it works.
  • Ensuring Availability: After an intensive training period, you will take over part of our on-call duties and help ensure that our systems run around the clock.

Requirements

Technical Skills

  • Qualification: A completed apprenticeship as a system integration IT specialist, IT system electronics, or a comparable IT qualification.
  • Close to Hardware: Installing servers, pulling cables, replacing hardware, standing at a cold back and solving a problem: This is not a necessary evil for you, but the part of the job that you like.
  • Hardware Understanding: You know server hardware (e.g., Dell, Supermicro, HPE), know how SSD, NVMe, and HDD differ, and are not afraid of firmware updates or a look into the BIOS.
  • Linux Basics: You move confidently on the Linux command line (e.g., Ubuntu, Debian, Rocky Linux) and can install, configure, and analyze systems.
  • Networking Basics: TCP/IP, switching, VLANs, and structured cabling are familiar terrain for you – you know which cable goes where and why.
  • Automation Curiosity: You enjoy getting rid of recurring tasks via Bash or Python instead of doing them manually for the twentieth time.

Personal Skills

  • Thirst for Knowledge: You want to understand what is running on the hardware you set up – and are eager to delve into topics such as OpenStack, Ceph, GPU computing, and AI infrastructure.
  • Carefulness: Neatly laid cables, correct labeling, and well-maintained documentation are for you an expression of good work, not a tedious duty.
  • Sense of Responsibility: You work in a structured manner, even when no one is watching, and know when to decide on your own and when to consult.
  • Team Player Mentality: Our team is small and in the process of being built – everyone jumps in where they are needed.

What We Offer

  • Team Spirit: You will become part of a dynamic, growing team with a genuine you-culture. We offer you the freedom to actively contribute your talents and shape the future of the company.
  • Career Opportunities: There is no standstill with us. With each new location, our team grows – and with it, your opportunities to take on responsibility.
  • Flexibility Where Possible: Your work takes place where our hardware is located. What does not have to happen on-site, you can do flexibly and remotely. Our office spaces in Berlin, Augsburg, and Vienna are also open to you.
  • Your Development: We invest in you. With your own further training budget, you decide which technical or personal skills you want to deepen next – and we are happy to show you the way deeper into our cloud stack.
  • Equipment: To enable you to perform at your best, you will receive the appropriate tools. Choose freely between the latest Apple or Windows devices for your equipment.
  • Mobility: We provide a company car so you can get to our locations relaxed – also usable privately.
  • Purpose: If you would like to engage in voluntary work, we support you in making your contribution to society.

Ready for the Challenge?

Most people in IT never see a data center from the inside. You would build our infrastructure from the ground up – from empty racks to the running cloud.

We look forward to your application!

  • People Manager

  • Heiko Lüders

  • Head of Data Center Operations
