About the Role

The Energy Storage Consultant will lead and deliver technical, engineering, and advisory services for Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across China, with potential to support services in other APAC markets. This role supports DNV’s expanding presence in China and is supported by a growing pipeline of BESS technology review and due diligence assignments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform technical reviews and due diligence of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), with a primary focus on battery systems, battery cells, and power conversion systems (PCS).
  • Review and assess BESS design documentation and conduct technology evaluations covering system performance, safety, reliability, and compliance at both system and major component levels.
  • Review test reports, certification documents, and compliance evidence against applicable standards and regulations (e.g., IEC, UL, NFPA, GB standards, and grid codes).
  • Participate in or lead factory visits, manufacturing audits, and quality control assessments at battery, PCS, and BESS system integrator facilities.
  • Review Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) procedures, witness FAT activities, and prepare clear, objective FAT witness reports.
  • Support Technical Due Diligence (TDD), Owner’s Engineering, and Lender’s Technical Advisory scopes for utility-scale BESS projects.
  • Support Owner’s Engineering activities, including BESS solution comparisons, technology selection, and pre-contract technical evaluations.
  • Prepare clear, well-structured technical reports, risk registers, and recommendations in accordance with DNV methodologies.
  • Manage assigned tasks and deliverables efficiently, ensuring technical quality, consistency, and timely delivery.
  • Collaborate with regional and global teams to share technology insights and contribute to the continuous improvement of internal technical frameworks and methodologies.
  • Support or lead proposal development and business development activities, including technical inputs and contract negotiations, as appropriate to experience level.

Requirements

  • 3–10 years of experience related to Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) products, engineering, or project delivery.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Power Systems, or a related technical discipline.
  • Good working knowledge of lithium-ion BESS technologies, with experience or technical exposure to battery cells/modules, PCS, BMS, thermal management, and system-level integration.
  • Experience supporting technical review, engineering, testing, or quality-related activities for BESS components or systems through OEMs, system integrators, consultancy roles, or utility-scale / C&I projects.
  • Exposure to factory inspections, manufacturing audits, FATs, or quality control activities.
  • Ability to review technical documentation, test reports, and certification evidence and identify key technical risks or gaps.
  • Familiarity with applicable international and Chinese standards (e.g., IEC, UL, NFPA, GB standards).
  • Experience with other energy storage technologies in addition to lithium-ion batteries is an advantage.
  • Comfortable in a client-facing consulting or project environment, with clear and professional technical communication skills.
  • Willing to travel primarily within China, with occasional travel across APAC.
  • Native or fluent Mandarin; professional-level English for technical reporting and international collaboration.
