About the Position

Executive Medical Director (East Region)

Munson Healthcare, northern Michigan’s largest healthcare system, is seeking a dynamic and experienced Executive Medical Director for the East Region. This role is a blend of .8 administrative and.2 clinical responsibilities, offering a unique opportunity to lead and innovate in a beautiful and vibrant region.

Responsibilities

  • Clinical Quality & Evidence-Based Care: Demonstrate advanced expertise in ambulatory practice operations and lead the adoption of evidence-based, multidisciplinary care models aligned with the latest clinical standards.
  • Performance Improvement & Resource Stewardship: Drive physician network quality, cost management, and performance initiatives; ensure efficient, ethical use of clinical resources and adherence to evidence-based protocols.
  • Regulatory, Safety & Compliance Leadership: Ensure compliance with regulatory, legal, and accreditation standards while advancing safe care practices, care coordination, and continuity across the network.
  • Administrative & Financial Oversight: Oversee documentation integrity, revenue capture, budgeting, and financial performance; contribute to physician compensation models, contracting decisions, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Strategic & Operational Leadership: Partner across clinical and administrative dyads to execute strategic plans, support growth, and lead quality, patient experience, and operational excellence initiatives.
  • Physician Leadership & Engagement: Lead, mentor, and evaluate medical directors and clinicians; support recruitment, development, performance improvement, and foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Medical Doctor (MD or DO) from an accredited institution
  • Board certification in area of clinical expertise or has equivalent qualifications in compliance with medical staff credentialing process.
  • Active medical license in the State of Michigan (or eligible for licensure)
  • Education in business, management, quality and safety science (preferred)
  • Minimum of five years of clinical practice (preferred)
  • At least 5 years of progressive leadership experience
  • Proven ability to lead clinical teams across multiple practices
  • Strong interpersonal, strategic, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated success in quality improvement, physician engagement, and healthcare operations.
