About the Position
Fraud Prevention Specialist
Location: São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil
Department: Data & Analytics
SumUp's Fraud Prevention team sits at the intersection of risk, data, and global payments, moving fast to stay ahead of one of fintech's most dynamic challenges: stopping fraud at scale across multiple markets and products.
As part of our global, product-focused approach, this role will contribute to protecting SumUp's acquiring business across Brazil, Mexico, and the United States. You'll work using data, analytical thinking, and fraud prevention expertise to help reduce losses while protecting approval rates and the experience of our merchants and their customers.
This is an opportunity to work on complex, high-impact fraud challenges in a global environment. We expect you to operate with autonomy, build a deep understanding of fraud performance, and turn your analysis into practical strategies and recommendations that improve how we prevent fraud over time.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to fraud prevention strategy for SumUp's acquiring business across Brazil, Mexico, and the United States.
- Analyze large and complex datasets to identify fraud trends, emerging patterns, performance changes, anomalies, and opportunities for improvement.
- Design, configure, test, and optimize decision-engine rules, thresholds, and authentication strategies in line with business needs and fraud risk.
- Monitor fraud, chargeback, approval-rate, and false-positive performance, using relevant metrics to assess the effectiveness of prevention strategies.
- Investigate the root causes of changes in performance and recommend clear, data-driven actions.
- Own analytical workstreams from problem definition through analysis, recommendation, implementation, and impact measurement.
- Respond effectively to changing fraud patterns and support the development of appropriate mitigation strategies when new risks emerge.
- Translate regulatory and card-scheme requirements into effective and actionable fraud controls.
- Communicate insights, risks, trade-offs, and recommendations clearly to stakeholders across the business.
- Build strong working relationships with Fraud Operations, Disputes, Product, Engineering, Legal, Compliance, Finance, and regional teams.
- Contribute to a consistent, well-documented, and continuously improving approach to fraud prevention.
Requirements
- Proven experience in fraud prevention, fraud strategy, risk management, or a related analytical role within payments, fintech, or another data-driven environment.
- Advanced SQL and Python skills, including experience working with data pipelines and analyzing large datasets.
- Hands-on experience configuring fraud decision engines, rule-based systems, transaction monitoring, or authentication strategies.
- Power user of Tableau or a similar business intelligence and data visualization platform.
- Practical knowledge of applied statistics and modeling, including A/B testing, classification, or regression.
- Strong knowledge of Brazilian Card-Present and Card-Not-Present fraud patterns and the ability to apply that knowledge to fraud strategy.
- Understanding of how to balance merchant conversion, approval rates, fraud losses, and false positives when making decisions.
- Ability to translate complex analysis into clear, actionable recommendations and communicate confidently with technical, operational, and senior stakeholders.
- Proactive, autonomous, and comfortable solving ambiguous problems in a fast-changing environment.
- Strong prioritization and execution skills, with a growth mindset and the ability to adapt quickly as fraud patterns and business needs change.
- Advanced to fluent level in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Degree in Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, or a related quantitative field.
Nice to Have
- Participation in industry working groups, webinars, or communities focused on Brazilian fraud trends.
- Knowledge of acquirer settlement flows and interchange economics.
- Experience working with card-scheme requirements, regulatory changes, or fraud controls in the Brazilian payments market.
We Offer
- Opportunity to work with a truly global, multicultural team from our dynamic São Paulo hub in the heart of the city.
- Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion: be part of a workplace that values and promotes diversity, fostering an inclusive environment where everyone's perspectives are respected and embraced.
- Enrolment onto our Virtual Stock Option programme: you will own a stake in SumUp's future success.
- A dedicated annual L&D budget of R$ 10,000 for education, certifications, and conferences.
- Generous time off: enjoy 22 working days of paid leave, plus public holidays and special leave days.
- Stay fit: Wellhub membership included and gym at the office.
- Financial wellness: SumUp contributes to your private retirement plan with Santander.
- Mental well-being: access to Zenklub for therapy, coaching, and emotional wellness resources.
