About the Position

Genetic Counselor - Oncology Support Services

At Munson Healthcare, we are seeking a dedicated Genetic Counselor to join our Oncology Support Services team in Traverse City, Michigan. This role is integral to our commitment to providing exceptional care and support to our patients and their families.

Responsibilities

  • Embraces and supports the Performance Improvement philosophy of Munson Healthcare.
  • Promotes personal and patient safety.
  • Has a basic understanding of Relationship-Based Care (RBC) principles.
  • Conducts and/or delegates intake of all referrals, collecting all relevant data.
  • Summarizes all information in an organized manner and reviews cases with a physician when needed.
  • Conducts pre-authorization and insurance verification of benefits for genetic counseling and testing.
  • Counsels patients and families about the nature of testing, risks, benefits, and possible results.
  • Arranges special laboratory testing, explaining tests, potential results, and implications to the family.
  • Communicates and interprets normal and abnormal test results to patients.
  • Counsels patients following testing and provides appropriate follow-up, counseling, and coordination of any additional testing.
  • Arranges for additional medical consultations and referrals as necessary.
  • Assists with research protocols involving tumor-genetic and genomic testing and germ-line testing.
  • Collaborates with MHC facilities and community providers to develop new processes and programs that enhance delivery of care.

Requirements

  • A Master's degree from an accredited genetic counseling program.
  • Board certified or board eligible in genetic counseling by either the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) or the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC).
  • Minimum of two years clinical experience preferred.
  • Ability to work independently in decision-making, management issues, and problem-solving.
