Job Description, Responsibilities & Requirements

About the Position

We are seeking a Head of Legal to provide legal and compliance oversight across PayDo Group’s operations in multiple jurisdictions. PayDo, a leading Electronic Money Institution (EMI) authorized by the FCA in the UK, FINTRAC in Canada, and MFSA in Malta, operates in 140+ countries and over 25 industries. As a Head of Legal, you will be responsible for providing legal and compliance oversight across the PayDo Group’s operations in Malta, the UK, Canada, and other jurisdictions.

Responsibilities

  • Advise senior leadership on corporate governance matters
  • Maintain and update company governance policies and ensure regulatory responsibilities are met
  • Identify, monitor, and mitigate legal, regulatory, and operational risks
  • Maintain structured records of the company’s legal, regulatory, and governance documentation
  • Lead and manage licensing processes for PayDo Group
  • Support licensing and regulatory compliance during expansion into new jurisdictions
  • Monitor and interpret applicable financial regulations and data protection laws
  • Oversee regulatory reporting, audits, and compliance obligations across all jurisdictions
  • Serve as primary contact for external law firms, auditors, regulators, and other stakeholders
  • Hire new specialists, mentor subordinates, and support their professional development
  • Foster a collaborative, knowledge-sharing, and result-oriented environment within the Legal team
  • Set and monitor SLA, KPI, and OKR metrics for the team
  • Prepare monthly reports on Legal team operational and supporting processes including QA processes

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of team management experience
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in regulated fintech companies – EMI, PSP, or similar industries
  • Strong knowledge of financial regulations including AML, KYC, data protection, and payment services regulation
  • Experience with financial licensing processes in multiple jurisdictions (EU, UK, Canada, or similar)
  • Solid understanding of international corporate law, EU licensing, and compliance principles
  • Proven experience in enhancing company compliance with regulatory obligations
  • Experience dealing with audits, correspondent, and corporate bank accounts
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment with a focus on results and growth
  • Fluent English
  • Master’s degree in law

Nice to Have

  • Knowledge of the regulatory framework in Malta or experience working with the MFSA
