Job description
About the Position
We are seeking a Junior Analytics Developer to join our IT team within the Criminal Justice Digital Transformation Team. You will focus on analytics development – creating and maintaining dashboards and reports that help teams and clients monitor performance, understand trends, and make data-driven decisions.
Depending on project needs, you may work with data and reporting requirements linked to IPS digital solutions (including offender management solutions such as HORUS 360 iOMS), and internal operational analytics.
This is an entry-level role with coaching and structured learning. We value curiosity, strong fundamentals, and a portfolio mindset (projects count!).
Responsibilities
Dashboard & Report Development
- Build and maintain interactive dashboards and recurring reports (operational, management, and project KPIs).
- Apply data visualisation best practices (clarity, consistency, usability, accessibility).
- Iterate quickly based on feedback, evolving requirements, and product changes.
Requirements & KPI Definition
- Support requirement-gathering with internal stakeholders (product, operations, delivery teams).
- Help define KPIs and ensure calculations are consistent and documented.
- Translate business questions into measurable metrics and report specifications.
Data Preparation, Modelling & Querying
- Write, test, and improve SQL queries (joins, aggregations, filtering, validation checks).
- Contribute to basic data modelling for analytics (dimensions/measures, KPI logic).
- Help maintain “single source of truth” datasets to reduce manual reporting.
Data Quality, Security & Documentation
- Perform routine data validation and investigate anomalies with the team.
- Follow strong confidentiality and secure data-handling practices (working in a regulated, sensitive-data context).
- Document dashboards, data definitions, calculations, and assumptions for transparency and continuity.
Team Collaboration
- Collaborate with developers, QA testers, product and delivery colleagues to align reporting with real user needs.
- Participate in team rituals (planning, reviews, retrospectives) and continuous improvement.
Requirements
Education
- Recently completed Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in IT, Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field.
Experience
- 0–2 years of relevant experience (internship, thesis/capstone, traineeship, personal projects). A portfolio (GitHub, dashboards, case study, thesis, or sample report pack) is strongly valued.
Technical Skills (must-have fundamentals)
- Solid foundation in SQL (joins, aggregations, grouping, basic performance awareness).
- Familiarity with at least one BI/reporting tool (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Qlik, Looker Studio).
- Strong Excel/spreadsheet skills (data cleaning, pivots, structured reporting).
- Understanding of core data concepts (tables, keys, data quality, basic modelling).
Nice to Have (not required)
- Power BI: DAX, Power Query (M), semantic modelling concepts, workspace/publishing basics.
- Python (or R) for data wrangling/automation.
- Git/version control fundamentals.
- Exposure to APIs, ETL concepts, or cloud platforms (Azure/AWS/GCP).
- Awareness of GDPR/data protection principles and secure handling of personal data.
Languages
- English proficiency (written and spoken).
- Portuguese is an advantage; Spanish and French are also valued (depending on projects).
Personal Attributes
- Ethics and Integrity: Strong sense of responsibility, confidentiality, and care in handling sensitive information.
- Analytical Mindset: Curious, detail-oriented, and able to break down ambiguous problems into clear steps.
- Communication: Comfortable explaining findings clearly (what the data says, what it doesn’t say, and why it matters).
- Growth Mindset: Eager to learn, receptive to feedback, and motivated to build a strong analytics foundation.
We Offer
- Opportunity to work in a dynamic and innovative environment.
- Professional growth and development opportunities.
- Flexible working arrangements, including remote work options.
