Line 1 Risk Manager – Daily Banking

ING Australia is on the lookout for an experienced Line 1 Risk Manager to join our Daily Banking Tribe, supporting our Retail Bank.

As the Line 1 Risk Manager – Daily Banking, you will be the go-to expert for ensuring ING’s everyday banking products are safe, compliant, and customer-focused. This role is about more than just ticking boxes – you’ll embed risk thinking into the heart of our agile Tribes, working across Daily Banking, Digital, and Customer Interaction teams. From identifying operational risks in product lifecycles to designing smart controls and participating in project deliveries, you’ll ensure we stay ahead of regulatory obligations while delivering great customer outcomes. You’ll lead risk reviews, regulatory changes, and partner with stakeholders to uplift risk maturity across the business. This is a hands-on role where you’ll balance customer, risk, compliance, and business with innovation, influence decisions at all levels, and help shape the future of banking – all while thriving in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Embed risk thinking into agile squads across Daily Banking, Digital, and Customer Interaction Tribes, ensuring compliance and strong risk culture.
  • Identify and assess operational risks in product lifecycles, design and implement effective controls, and uplift the risk control framework.
  • Be the risk lead in projects and change initiatives, delivering risk assessments, stakeholder engagements, and ensuring safe delivery.
  • Partner with stakeholders and 2nd line teams to ensure regulatory obligations are met and processes align with group standards.
  • Drive continuous improvement by reviewing end-to-end processes, identifying gaps, and contributing to projects that enhance risk maturity.
  • Provide expert advice and reporting, chair risk meetings, and influence decisions to keep products operating safely within risk appetite.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in line 1 risk management (minimum 3 years), ideally within retail banking or financial services.
  • Solid understanding of regulatory frameworks and compliance obligations in Australia (ASIC, APRA, AFCA).
  • Hands-on knowledge of the first line of defence, including designing, testing, and implementing effective controls and risk in change risk assessments.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to influence and negotiate at all levels.
  • Analytical and problem-solving mindset, capable of turning complex issues into practical, customer-focused solutions.
  • Agile and adaptable, thriving in fast-paced environments and comfortable working across multiple business units.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Agile methodologies
  • Strong problem-solving skills
