Manager, Software Engineering, Fullstack (Repayment UX Engineering)
Primary stack
Job description
About the Position
Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without any hidden fees or compounding interest. The Repayment UX team owns one of the most high-trust surfaces across Affirm’s products: the moment a customer pays us back. We’re a full-stack team based entirely in Europe within the same time zone, but culturally rooted in Silicon Valley. The user journeys we build and own reach more than 20 million people who together repay over $40B in loans each year. We are full-stack owners of the Manage tab within our mobile and web apps, where customers stay on top of their payment plans and make the payments.
We are looking for an empowering, accountable Engineering Manager to lead and grow Repayment UX. You’ll set the team’s technical direction, taking ownership of their roadmap, delivery, and on-call support. You’ll partner closely with Product, Design, Analytics, and other Engineering teams. You’ll take a high-performing team anchored to their tech lead and give it dedicated leadership.
If you are passionate about creating world-class user experiences and excited by the challenge of directly owning a critical part of a fast-growing product – join us. Help build the next generation of Affirm’s apps, improving people’s lives at scale.
Responsibilities
- Lead and grow a well-balanced team of engineers – setting clear expectations, giving direct feedback, and developing each engineer toward their next level.
- Own the team’s technical strategy and multi-quarter roadmap, tying it to initiatives that build customer trust and move Affirm’s business.
- Empower your tech lead and engineers to hold the design and quality bar, supporting them hands-on throughout technical design and cross-functional alignment.
- Own the availability, reliability, and performance of consumer-critical systems – on-call, incident response, and reducing operational toil.
- Keep the team shipping in small increments, breaking large programs into sprint-sized milestones with clear, accountable owners.
- Partner across Product, Design, and Analytics, and other Engineering teams, building trust and taking part in cross-functional efforts.
- Guide the team to multiply their output through focus and leverage, including agentic AI.
- Drive hiring and onboarding to grow a diverse, high-performing team, and foster a culture of ownership, quality, and transparency.
- On-Call Rotation - There would be an on-call rotation for this role as a requirement.
Requirements
- 7+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years managing and growing engineering teams.
- Proven experience delivering consumer-facing software and driving execution through ambiguity.
- A track record of managing performance directly – setting clear expectations, giving candid feedback, and developing engineers toward results and growth.
- The technical judgment required to guide architecture, quality, and reliability decisions, with the instinct to empower senior engineers to make the calls rather than making them all yourself.
- Experience leading significant technical initiatives end-to-end, ideally decoupling or re-platforming consumer-facing systems within clear time constraints.
- Familiarity with modern full-stack development – declarative UI frameworks like React or React Native, and a backend-for-frontend behind them.
- A calm, decisive presence through change and ambiguity – building alignment, resolving tensions, and leading others through complex decisions.
- A humble, team-first leader who builds a high-trust, psychologically safe culture, while also prioritizing your own growth.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills that support effective collaboration with our global cross-functional teams.
