MARINE FIELD SCIENTIST

We are seeking a motivated and adaptable Marine Field Scientist to support the delivery of marine environmental surveys throughout the UK and overseas. The successful candidate will play a key role in the preparation, mobilization, execution, and reporting of marine surveys supporting offshore renewable energy, infrastructure, environmental monitoring, research, and marine licensing projects. The role offers the opportunity to work in a variety of offshore and coastal environments while contributing to the collection of high-quality environmental data.

This role will involve regular survey work away from home in coastal and offshore environments around the UK and overseas. Deployments may range from a few days to several weeks at a time and may involve working offshore for over 100 days per year. Mobilization may occasionally be required at short notice from locations across the UK or via a designated airport.

Key Responsibilities

  • Complete survey documentation and support Project Managers and the wider Survey Team with survey preparation and delivery activities.
  • Prepare survey equipment, consumables, and documentation for field operations.
  • Undertake nearshore, coastal, and offshore marine environmental surveys throughout the UK and overseas.
  • Operate and support the maintenance, calibration, and general upkeep of survey equipment, including underwater camera systems, benthic sampling equipment, positioning systems, and water quality profilers.
  • Report equipment defects, non-conformities, and opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Ensure the safe collection, handling, storage, and return of environmental samples and survey data.
  • Undertake seabed imagery review and analysis.

Requirements

Essential Requirements

  • Degree in Marine Biology, Marine Science, Oceanography, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
  • Valid offshore safety certification (e.g., STCW, BOSIET, or GWO).
  • Valid offshore medical certification.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team and in offshore environments.
  • A proactive, adaptable, and conscientious approach to work.
  • Willingness to travel and work away from home for extended periods.

Desirable Requirements

  • Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) and/or Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) certification.
  • Experience undertaking marine environmental surveys.
  • Experience operating benthic sampling and underwater imaging systems.
  • Familiarity with GIS software and thematic mapping.
  • Experience of seabed imagery analysis.

Working Arrangements

The successful candidate will preferably be based at our Gloucester office; however, hybrid and remote working arrangements will be considered for the right candidate.
