Mechanical Engineer

About the Position

Ajax Systems is an international technology company, the largest developer and manufacturer of Ajax smart home security systems in Europe. We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join our Mechanical Team in Kyiv, Ukraine. This role involves designing, prototyping, and optimizing mechanical components for our smart home security systems.

Responsibilities

• Design and 3D Modeling:

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks (95% solid modeling, 5% surface modeling), basic knowledge of sheet metal.
  • Creation of precise assemblies, constraints, tolerance verification, and preparation of models for mold production.
  • Ability to break down complex projects into sub-assemblies, work with reference geometry, and configurations.

• DFM / DFA / Manufacturing:

  • Knowledge of mold work: opening directions, pouring points, parting lines, risks of underfilling/air pockets.
  • Optimization of designs for scalability and cost reduction (minimizing parts, reducing welds, molding cycles).
  • Experience collaborating with factories in Ukraine or China, understanding the lifecycle of molds, and participating in changes after T1/T2.
  • Basics of metalworking technologies: bending, stamping, laser cutting, milling for internal frames and auxiliary elements.

• Testing and Prototyping:

  • Manual verification and assembly of prototypes, analysis of critical nodes.
  • Detection and resolution of issues with sealing, clearances, and alignment.
  • Ability to use measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, gauges).

• Material Science and Standards:

  • Knowledge of properties of ABS, PC, PC+ABS, PA+GF, TPE, TPU: shrinkage, impact strength, heat resistance, elasticity.
  • Understanding how material behavior changes in production and operation (temperature, moisture, UV).
  • Ability to balance price/quality/manufacturability when selecting materials.

• Functional Elements:

  • Development of fasteners, clips, guides, rubber seals, TPE/TPU elements, mounting slots.
  • Design of interface elements: buttons, indicators, light guides, ports, ventilation holes.
  • Understanding of sealing methods (IP54–IP67), heat dissipation, and battery compartment assembly.

• Documentation and Production Support:

  • Generation of complete drawing packages: 2D contours, tolerance tables, BOM, assembly specifications.
  • Incorporation of changes based on prototyping results or production feedback.
  • Participation in the preparation of technical descriptions for manufacturing, assembly instructions, and design documentation control.

• Communication and Tools:

  • Basic English (A2+) for technical documentation and communication with foreign partners.
  • Experience with PDM / ERP systems (preferably SolidWorks PDM).
  • Independent problem-solving and analytical thinking: finding the right solution rather than "redrawing the part".
  • Full cycle of designing plastic housings and mechanical assemblies for consumer electronics.
  • Development of DFM- and DFH-oriented solutions considering mass production (injection molding, assembly, sealing, maintainability).
  • Interaction with hardware, embedded engineers, industrial designers, technologists, quality department, and production.
  • Creation of ergonomic, intuitive designs that adapt easily to different operating environments.
  • Preparation of documentation for production transfer (2D drawings, specifications, technical requirements, 3D models for molds).
  • Mold support and coordination of changes after initial castings (T0–T2), analysis of casting defects.
  • Participation in testing and feedback from prototypes and production, making constructive changes.
  • Control of engineering compliance of the finished product with expected technical parameters (stiffness, assembly, weight, IP protection).
  • Support of the product from concept to mass production, including cost analysis and impact of design decisions on cost.
  • Ability to propose and implement own ideas that impact the product and production.
