Job description

About the Position

Mechatronics Design Intern - Hardware Grasshopper wanted (m/f/d)

Location: München, Bayern, DE

Employment Type: Full-time, Intern

About the Role

Robots couldn't handle soft materials. We fixed that.

Now we're scaling it into reality, and we need the sharpest engineering minds: the ones who turn breakthrough ideas into machines that hold up.

At sewts, we build the intelligence that lets robots manipulate deformable materials - textiles, towels, cables - with human-like precision. Our systems are already deployed in production across Europe and expanding into the US.

We are building a foundational technology stack called sewts.JUPITER. JUPITER uses genAI to realistically simulate the behavior of deformable and soft objects, creating the computer vision models and grasping strategies behind our machines. Based on our physical AI, for the first time ever, robots can handle soft and deformable materials. With over €10M in funding, we will bring automation into untapped industries: cloth manufacturing, textiles handling, recycling, and e-commerce.

This is where AI leaves the screen and enters the physical world.

And in the physical world, nothing forgives you.

Responsibilities

  • Industrial robot cells: Design and develop them from early concept to production-ready system.
  • Engineering calculations: Perform calculations for motors, conveyors, and pneumatics, and select the right robots for the job.
  • Fast prototypes: Turn new ideas into working solutions you can test, break, and improve.
  • Engineering data management: Own CAD models, drawings, versions, and ensure the whole team can rely on it.

Requirements

  • Educational background: Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Experience: 2+ years in product design and development, ideally in robotics or automation.
  • Skills:
    • Solid CAD skills (Inventor and SolidWorks)
    • Fluent English; German is a plus.
  • Mindset: Hands-on, tinkerer's mindset; proactive, independent way of working.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with electrical or pneumatic design.
  • Exposure to PLM tools or CAD version-control practices.
  • Background in robotics, automotive, or the textile/laundry industry.

Please note: you don't need to tick every box. We're looking for motivated people excited to grow into the role.

Why This Role

  • Direct, visible impact: Every system you design ends up running live, keeping robots working reliably in the field.
  • Innovative technology: Build technology that has never existed before - mechanical systems for physical AI.
  • Real responsibility: Own your designs end-to-end, from first sketch to production line.
  • Respectful team: The engineers who design and build systems that actually hold up are never an afterthought here.
  • Growth opportunities: Grow with us as we scale across Europe - your designs are at the core of that expansion.
  • Munich-based: With the chance to see your work in action at customer sites across Europe.

We Offer

  • Competitive salary.
  • Learning opportunities and fast growth environment.
  • Speciality coffee at the office.
  • Flexible working setup.
  • Regular team events, high trust, low bureaucracy.

About the Company

At sewts we are automating complex processes by teaching robots human-like perception skills. We are a young, ambitious, and diverse team of eight different nationalities with the mission to become the global go-to Partner for automated processing of deformable and soft materials. We are always willing to push our boundaries to reach our goals and targets, while learning from the daily challenges of an emerging startup. We are always on a hunt for likeminded individuals who are passionate about robotics automation, AI and courageous to create an impact.
