Job Description, Responsibilities & Requirements

About the Position

Room 8 Group is an end-to-end strategic partner in external game development. Working across all platforms, we provide creative and technical expertise across game development, technology, art, trailers, and QA for AAA and AA games.

Our Game Development team provides comprehensive co-dev and full-cycle dev solutions, across all platforms. We’ve helped make some of the biggest games of the past decade, like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and III, and we work with dozens of the world’s biggest publishers and developers.

Through primarily organic growth, we are proudly independent, now home to around 1,100 creatives based in Europe, North America, and South America.

The next great challenge is coming:

As a Mid SDET / Tools Engineer, your primary responsibility is to build and maintain engineering tools, focusing on Unreal Engine 5 C++ and Python-based pipeline tooling.

You will take well-scoped features end-to-end while working closely with senior engineers and the Lead SDET. You will also contribute to the SDET domain by supporting and extending the internal automation framework and writing automated tests for your tools.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain UE5 editor and runtime tools in C++
  • Build and extend DCC and pipeline tools in Python (Blender, Maya, Houdini)
  • Implement Unreal Engine plugins, Slate/UMG or Dear ImGui tools, subsystems, actors, and console commands
  • Integrate tooling with Perforce, REST/JSON APIs, and CI/CD systems
  • Develop and maintain automated tests (unit, integration, end-to-end)
  • Debug and root-cause complex technical issues across tools and pipeline systems
  • Provide support to QA, artists, and engineers using internal tools
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to engineering quality standards
  • Collaborate with senior engineers on technical design and implementation decisions
  • Continuously improve tooling reliability, performance, and usability

Requirements

  • Strong modern C++ development experience
  • Hands-on Unreal Engine 5 experience (C++ plugins, reflection system, subsystems, Slate/UMG or Dear ImGui)
  • Strong Python skills (scripting, pytest, CLI tools)
  • Experience with Perforce (p4) in production workflows
  • REST API / JSON integration experience
  • Understanding of 3D content pipelines (LODs, materials, draw calls, collision)
  • Ability to deliver scoped features end-to-end with limited supervision
  • Experience writing automated tests (unit, integration, or end-to-end)
  • 2+ years of professional software development or technical tools/QA engineering experience with Unreal Engine exposure (ideally shipped/live project experience)

Nice to Have

  • DCC scripting (Blender, Maya, Substance Painter, etc.)
  • Houdini (SOPs / Houdini Engine / PDG)
  • C# / .NET for test automation framework contribution
  • CI/CD experience (GitLab CI, Jenkins) and JUnit-style reporting
  • Unreal Engine profiling (Unreal Insights, Stat system)
  • Knowledge of Nanite, Lumen, World Partition, ISM, PCG
  • Image capture / visual regression testing tools
  • Exposure to AI/LLM-assisted tooling or workflows

We Offer

  • Competitive financial reward
  • Challenges to raise your XPs score working on the projects of the top global game dev publishers
  • Private medical care, paid time off, and more
