Job Description, Responsibilities & Requirements

About the Position

Do you have the news judgement to lead a multi-award-winning team at the sharp end of environmental journalism? Do you want to pursue stories that don’t just report on policy, but change it? If you are hungry to set the agenda on critical environmental issues – from the climate crisis and biodiversity loss to the sewage scandal – this could be the role for you.

A rare opening has emerged at the market-leading publication ENDS Report. This is an exciting opportunity to take a central role in a talented newsroom that has delivered unprecedented impact through its groundbreaking investigative journalism and hard-hitting news output, prompting regulator investigations, inspiring legal action, and being regularly cited in Parliament.

We are the UK’s leading publication for environmental professionals, serving environment managers in business, regulators, environmental consultants, and a wide range of other environmental specialists. Our mission is to provide the investigative depth and human-led reporting that the environment and climate story deserves. At ENDS Report, we don’t just aggregate the news – we break it.

We are looking for a news editor to be the engine of our daily news output, bringing in your own original stories as well as leading reporters with a proven track record of delivering high-impact scoops that regularly set the agenda for national media outlets.

The successful candidate will support the deputy editor in planning, coordinating, and delivering the title’s news and analysis content. They will also have the opportunity to appear on our rapidly growing weekly podcast, The Eco Chamber.

This role will be focused on daily news, but we are keen to hear from journalists with an interest in pursuing in-depth environmental investigations that bring in high-quality original stories.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, commission, write, and edit and ensure timely delivery of news and news analysis, working under the direction of the deputy editor
  • Check and edit all news copy to ensure that it meets the brief, makes sense, and provides a compelling read
  • Where needed, support the news team by writing online news and news analysis, as well as features
  • Prepare ENDS Report’s flagship daily news bulletin and oversee the delivery of the title’s specialist bulletins
  • Line management responsibilities for junior members of staff, including helping them develop their skills and maximize their contribution to ENDS Report

Requirements

  • Excellent commissioning and copy-editing skills
  • First-class writing skills
  • Good familiarity with all the subject areas covered by the ENDS brand
  • An analytical mind - ability to process data, understand it, and know how to apply it
  • Understanding commercial drivers – especially what drives reader loyalty and subscriber retention, and what converts audiences into paying subscribers
  • Experience with analytics tools (Google Analytics, social media monitoring tools, etc.)
  • Ability to get on with people from colleagues, both on the brand and centrally, and to apply the learning from those relationships to the task in hand
  • Persistence and energy - monitoring and improving systems once they are set up
  • Excellent networking skills - the ability to establish and develop good relationships with leading figures in specialist sectors
  • Demonstrated ability to manage workflow, deadlines, and ensure quality and timeliness of copy

We Offer

  • 25 days holiday per year excluding bank holidays (increasing 1 day per year of service up to 30 days)
  • Work from anywhere in the world for up to 3 weeks of the year with our ‘Work from Anywhere’ days
  • Flexible working hours (core hours from 10-3) allowing you the flexibility to adapt your work schedule to your personal commitments
  • Generous contributory pension scheme
  • Health Cash Plans: With our health cash plans, you can access a range of healthcare benefits, including coverage for medical expenses, dental care, optical services, and more
