Role Summary

The Payroll & Benefits Specialist will be responsible for performing complex tasks in relation to the processing of a bi-weekly payroll for all employees across Canada and the administration of all benefit plans including but not limited to Health, Dental, Disability, Employee Assistance, Canada Savings Bonds, Pension and RRSP. The Payroll & Benefits Specialist will operate as the subject matter expert regarding benefits administration and current payroll best practices, bringing forth recommendations for process improvements and creating efficiencies. The individual will also be responsible for managing the Time and Attendance system.

Responsibilities

Payroll

  • Processes Payroll for both union and non-union employees comprising of hourly, salaried and commissioned employees.
  • Investigates and resolves complex pay and system issues as they arise.
  • Prepares and submits records of employment.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional departments to ensure employee records, vacation accruals, etc. are accurate and up to date.
  • Conducts the quarterly vacation accrual and reconciliation process.

Benefits

  • Processes executive benefits such as share options, Car taxable, Directors fees for both Canadian and out-of-country executives and directors.
  • Coordinates, administers, and executes all benefits-related activities.
  • Coordinates annual benefits renewal & re-enrollment processes.
  • Responsible for the administration of the Pension and RRSP Plan.
  • Manages the monthly budget accrual process for the Payroll Benefits Budget.

Systems

  • Maintains the HRIS by entering employee personal and employment information.
  • Sets up and maintains employee records in Time & Attendance.
  • Sets up and maintains schedules, holiday programs, and benefit accruals in Time & Attendance.
  • Manages Time & Attendance reporting, hours import to payroll, and timecard exceptions.
  • Conducts training on the Time & Attendance system for new employees and operates as the Subject Matter Expert on the system.

Administration / Customer Service

  • Reconciles and remits third-party remittances such as WSIB, union dues, pension/RRSP, and benefit premiums.
  • Maintains a process throughout the course of the year to ensure smooth Year-End filing.
  • Maintains detailed records and documentation in accordance with statutory requirements.
  • Performs routine audits on payroll, benefits, and time and attendance output to ensure compliance and accuracy.
  • Responds to and effectively resolves employee inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Prepares communications and letters to employees regarding payroll and benefits-related matters.
  • Continuously keeps abreast of payroll & benefits best practices.
  • Leads projects as assigned by the Senior Manager, Payroll & Benefits.

Requirements

Core Skills

  • Degree/Diploma in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • CPA Certification is an asset.
  • 5+ years working within Payroll and Benefits; utilizing ADP/Pay@Work and EZ Labour.
  • Solid background working with Pay and Time & Attendance Systems.
  • Solid understanding of Year-End processes.
  • Working knowledge of Employment Standards across provinces.

Our ranges reflect the expected compensation at the time of posting. The final offer may vary and can be higher based on relevant skills, experience, location, and market conditions. Based on the role, the total rewards package may also include benefits, bonus, and other employee offerings.

The base salary range for this position is

$70,000 - $75,000 CAD
