PHP Backend Developer in Barcelona

As a PHP Backend Developer, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining SSP projects that vary in complexity and require high scalability. You will also have the opportunity to independently lead the entire system lifecycle-from conception and technical design to production deployment and monitoring. Furthermore, you will contribute to driving technical excellence, reducing technical debt, and leveraging artificial intelligence tools to generate business value within the AdTech ecosystem.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain key products and initiatives, working in an iterative, incremental, and decoupled manner to make steady progress while ensuring alignment with business needs and the product roadmap.
• Design, build, and maintain internal tools across multiple frameworks-ranging from intranets to small applications for testing new products.
• Develop and maintain internal tools (primarily in PHP) and lead their migration and refactoring toward lightweight, modular, and efficient architectures.
• Proactively ensure code quality, security, and maintainability through automated testing, CI/CD practices, and active participation in code reviews and technical alignment sessions.
• Identify security risks, technical debt, and server performance bottlenecks early on-especially those impacting the roadmap-by proposing pragmatic refactoring solutions and coordinating transparently with team leads.
• Take ownership of your work and play an active role in defining features and requirements, while implementing best practices across projects.
• You will take full ownership of production components, measuring the real impact of each new feature, interpreting key performance and business metrics alongside the Data team, and helping to plan and estimate short- and long-term deliverables.
• You will serve as a key resource for resolving complex technical questions regarding the runtime environment, continuously researching AdTech industry trends, and integrating AI tools to optimize daily workflows and provide strategic recommendations to the Product Owner.

Requirements

• 4+ years of programming experience in backend environments, preferably in native PHP, demonstrating adaptability and a language-agnostic mindset when working with different stacks or languages.
• Experience with API integration.
• 2+ years of experience working with MySQL.
• Ability to write efficient, scalable, secure, clear, and well-documented code.

Nice to Have

• A mindset focused on software engineering and problem-solving rather than specific syntax; proficiency in PHP and the ability to easily learn or work with other languages ​​based on product needs.
• Knowledge of frontend web technologies (JavaScript, HTML5, CSS), with the autonomy to adjust views, integrate endpoints, and confidently work on frontend code.
• Ability to communicate complex technical concepts simply, clearly, and transparently to both engineering and business stakeholders.
• Ability to prioritize technical decisions based on the value they directly add to the final outcome and to understand every stage of the software lifecycle, from conceptualization to production deployment.
• A mindset of constant curiosity, an interest in mastering AdTech technologies, and proficiency in using AI tools to accelerate problem-solving and boost coding productivity.
• Experience with NoSQL databases and in-memory/key-value storage (Redis, Aerospike, etc.) is also valued. Knowledge of or experience developing in other languages ​​such as.NET (C#), Go, Python, or Node.js is a plus.
