Purpose of Job
The Principal Banker is responsible for undertaking all tasks related to project development and implementation, including origination, structuring, execution, implementation, and monitoring of investment instruments offered by the Bank. This role involves effective leadership of project teams, supervision of junior banking staff, and contributing to business/pipeline development, client management, and policy dialogue.
Responsibilities
Structuring and Execution
- Lead structuring, negotiation, and execution of transactions, working with clients, authorities, consultants, and internal units.
- Manage resources and workload of project teams.
- Oversee the project due diligence process.
- Ensure quality and appropriateness of TC assistance components.
- Ensure all transactions are completed within specified timeframes and to a high standard.
Portfolio Monitoring, Value Creation, and Reporting
- Take responsibility for effective monitoring of all projects within the team.
- Supervise implementation and monitoring of relevant TC assignments.
- Ensure timely notification of critical portfolio issues to relevant managers.
- Manage and supervise junior bankers in portfolio monitoring.
Policy Dialogue
- Contribute to policy dialogue in cooperation with relevant units within the Bank and Banking country teams.
- Assist in procuring grants and technical cooperation funds.
Business Development
- Assist with marketing and business development efforts to build market contacts and develop a broad deal flow.
- Screen project proposals to identify sound and executable investments.
Staff Management
- Assist in recruiting, training, coaching, and mentoring junior bankers.
- Ensure adequate quality of project work and appropriate workload distribution.
- Develop productive relationships within the organization.
Requirements
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred or equivalent experience.
- Professional qualification such as ACA, CFA, ACCA, or CIMA desirable.
- Strong quantitative/numerical skills.
- Credit analysis skills.
- Computer literacy with Microsoft Office and spreadsheet packages.
- Excellent understanding of relevant systems and processes.
- Stakeholder management skills.
- Coaching, mentoring, and leadership skills.
- Relationship management and negotiation skills.
- Ability to work to deadlines and under time pressure.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
- Good command over the local/country language is an advantage.
Experience & Knowledge
- Significant relevant financial industry experience.
- Strong familiarity with project finance structures and direct equity investments.
- Relevant sectorial experience in renewable energy and energy infrastructure.
- Relevant geographical experience in the Middle East and Africa.
- Practical experience of participating in and leading complex transactions.
