Job Description, Responsibilities & Requirements
About the Position
Research Scientist
Zurich
Are you passionate about the intersection of machine learning, robotics, and systems engineering? Do you believe that the future of AI lies in real-world applications? If so, Nomagic is looking for you.
At Nomagic, we are on a mission to develop general-purpose physical AI by leveraging massive deployment logs from real-world robotic systems. We are seeking Research Scientists to help us bridge the gap between classical robotic control stacks and advanced AI models.
Responsibilities
Your role will involve:
- Designing and Training Foundation Models: Define model architectures, objectives, and training curricula using multimodal robotic data.
- Data Management: Develop scalable data mixtures and sampling strategies from our extensive offline repositories.
- Research and Development: Conduct rigorous ablations to understand scaling laws, data quality effects, and large-model failure modes.
- Engineering Collaboration: Work closely with the ML Infrastructure team to ensure efficient distributed training.
- Post-Training Adaptation: Explore fine-tuning recipes to make models useful, controllable, and safe in real-world environments.
- Robustness Improvement: Develop methods to enhance real-world reliability and handle out-of-distribution edge cases.
- Benchmark Creation: Design evaluation frameworks and physical setups to measure actual robot performance.
- Feedback Loop: Analyze real-world evaluation results to guide the research direction.
Requirements
- Experience: Deep research and practical experience at the intersection of machine learning, systems engineering, and physical robotics.
- Proven Track Record: Experience in designing, training, and fine-tuning large-scale deep learning architectures (VLMs, VLAs, RL, RLHF, Imitation Learning) with real hardware deployment.
- Engineering Excellence: Strong fundamentals in deep learning frameworks (PyTorch/JAX) and a focus on empirical rigor.
- Robotics Intuition: Comfort working hands-on with hardware and understanding the full robotics stack.
- Pragmatic Research Mindset: Ability to seamlessly move between theoretical design and physical implementation.
We Offer
- Real-World Impact: Work with real robots, solving real problems every day.
- Relocation Package: Support for moving to Zurich.
- Flexible Working Hours: Enjoy a flexible work schedule.
- English-Speaking Environment: Work in an environment where English is the primary language.
