Job description
About the Position
We are looking for a Middle or Senior Ruby Full-Stack Engineer to join Softjourn's internal talent pool. The engagement can be part-time, with potential to grow to full-time, for temporary or permanent assignments. This search is not tied to a single project. The engineer may join any of our Ruby on Rails engagements, which typically include:
- Fintech and payment platforms, such as accounts receivable automation and payment gateway integrations;
- Ticketing and event platforms, covering ticket sales, discovery, scanning, access control applications, and organizer reporting;
- Modernization of complex legacy Rails products, including refactoring, performance work, and migration.
Responsibilities
- For Senior engineers: drive technical design decisions, lead modernization and refactoring efforts, mentor Mid engineers, and take part in code audit projects.
- For Senior engineers: help define how AI tools are used on the project (guidelines, review rules, where AI output is and isn't acceptable) and help PM identify AI-feature opportunities for clients.
- Develop new features and extend existing functionality in Ruby on Rails applications, from backend logic to UI.
- Maintain and support production systems: investigate and fix bugs, and release fixes.
- Refactor and optimize code for performance, maintainability, and security, and find bottlenecks.
- Build and maintain integrations with third-party services and APIs.
- Write and maintain automated tests (unit and integration) and keep code quality high through code reviews.
- Analyse and clarify requirements, and estimate tasks together with the PM, SA, BA, and the rest of the team.
- Communicate with team members and client stakeholders, and take part in Agile ceremonies (daily stand-ups, planning, demos).
- Use AI tools to speed up delivery (features, tests, documentation, onboarding into legacy code) while keeping code quality and security standards.
- Follow the project's AI usage policy and flag any risks around data exposure or licensing.
Requirements
- 3+ years of commercial experience with Ruby on Rails (5+ years for Senior), including Ruby 3.x and Rails 6/7+. Experience with both legacy and modern codebases is a plus.
- Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL and/or MySQL, including data modeling, migrations, indexing, and query optimization.
- Experience with background jobs (e.g. Sidekiq) and caching (Redis).
- Experience building RESTful APIs and integrating third-party services and APIs.
- Solid JavaScript, HTML, and CSS skills. Experience with React, Hotwire (Turbo/Stimulus), or server-rendered templates (ERB/Slim/HAML).
- Hands-on experience with RSpec (plus FactoryBot and Capybara) and a habit of keeping test coverage meaningful.
- Practical use of AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor) or building AI-powered features via APIs.
- Proactive, responsible, and comfortable with ambiguity. The candidate can analyze and estimate requirements and work effectively in distributed international teams.
- English level: B2+.
Nice to Have
- Applied knowledge of OOP, SOLID, MVC, and design patterns. Experience with linters (RuboCop) and code reviews, both giving and receiving.
- Experience in payments or fintech, such as payment gateway integration (Stripe or similar), merchant processing, or Ticketing domain experience, also counts.
- AWS-hosted environments and CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience with code audits: static analysis tools, dependency vulnerability scanning, and producing a technical debt assessment and remediation plan.
