About the Position

Senior Backend Engineer – Agentic Systems (m/f/d)

OMMAX GmbH, a digital strategy consultancy based in Europe, is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join our team in München, Germany. In this role, you will build the production backbone that enables our Forward Deployed AI Engineers (FDEs) to turn agentic workflows into secure, reliable, measurable, and reusable customer solutions.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop scalable backend services, APIs, asynchronous workflows, queues, databases, and distributed systems using Python, TypeScript, or comparable technologies.
• Create robust orchestration patterns for agentic systems, including tool calling, stateful workflows, routing, retries, human approvals, and context management.
• Build and maintain integrations with enterprise systems and SaaS applications, including OAuth, webhooks, SDKs, API clients, and data ingestion pipelines.
• Ensure production reliability through resilient error handling, idempotent design, rate-limit management, fallbacks, audit logs, and effective incident debugging.
• Develop evaluation and observability capabilities, including test datasets, trace capture, quality metrics, structured logging, workflow-level dashboards, and cost and latency monitoring.
• Establish shared platform primitives, templates, security standards, and governance patterns that accelerate each new FDE deployment while protecting customer data.

Requirements

• Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
• 4-6 years of experience in backend engineering, platform engineering, distributed systems, or comparable software engineering roles.
• Strong hands-on programming skills in Python, TypeScript, or both, and a solid understanding of modern software engineering best practices.
• Experience designing and operating scalable APIs, asynchronous systems, queues, databases, and distributed services in production environments.
• Familiarity with enterprise integrations, including OAuth, webhooks, REST APIs, SDKs, and data ingestion or normalization pipelines.
• Practical experience with LLM or agentic application patterns, such as tool calling, orchestration, state management, retrieval, evaluation, or observability.
• Fluency in English and ability to communicate technical topics clearly with engineers, FDEs, and client stakeholders; additional local language skills are a plus.
