About the Position
Senior Environmental Specialist
We are seeking a Senior Environmental Specialist to join Kier, a leading engineering consultancy, and play a pivotal role in delivering diverse environmental projects across the UK. This role involves supporting major infrastructure projects, focusing on environmental impact assessments and sustainability.
Responsibilities
- Support on major highways projects in the north, including A66 NTP and M6 Lune Gorge.
- Lead and contribute to client, stakeholder, and technical meetings.
- Work with the Construction team on site to deliver commitments in the Environmental Management Plan (EMP).
- Lead environmental impact assessments, identify key risks, and propose mitigation strategies.
- Ensure all relevant environmental permits, licenses, and consents are obtained in a timely manner.
- Promote decarbonization, climate resilience, nature-based solutions, and innovation.
- Support and mentor junior team members.
- Represent the team in client, stakeholder, and technical meetings.
Requirements
- A degree in Ecology or equivalent experience.
- Practitioner member of ISEP (or equivalent) and working towards CEnv.
- Robust understanding of UK environmental legislation and policy.
- Demonstrable experience undertaking environmental assessments for infrastructure or building projects.
- UK protected species license.
- Strong working knowledge and experience of UK Habitat survey, habitat condition assessments, Defra Biodiversity Metric, and Biodiversity Net Gain plans.

Location
- Penrith, Cumbria
- Travel to sites and offices required, with remote working available.
Hours
- 37.5 hours per week
- Some flexibility on hours available if desired.
