Senior Java Backend Engineer

About the Position

We are looking for a Senior Java Backend Engineer to join our client’s fast-growing e-commerce company in the automotive industry. The team is focused on scaling and enhancing a customized SAP Commerce (Hybris) platform that powers a high-traffic online marketplace.

You will work closely with technical and business stakeholders, contributing to backend services, integrations, performance optimization, and the evolution of a customized ecommerce ecosystem. This role requires a proactive engineer with a strong ownership mindset who can effectively translate business needs into technical solutions.

The project focuses on a customized SAP Commerce (Hybris)-based ecommerce platform that supports large-scale online operations. The engineering team is working on backend services, APIs, third-party integrations, database optimization, and the gradual adoption of microservices architecture.

As a senior member of the team, you will help scale the platform, improve system performance, and contribute to strategic technical decisions while collaborating directly with leadership and business stakeholders.

Working hours: 1:00 PM – 9:00 PM CET/CEST (to ensure overlap with US-based team)

Responsibilities

• Design and develop scalable, secure, and efficient backend systems
• Build and maintain APIs and integrations with external services
• Optimize application performance and database efficiency
• Design and maintain database structures
• Integrate payment, shipping, messaging, and other third-party platforms
• Contribute to architectural and technical decisions
• Review code and maintain high engineering standards
• Mentor and support other engineers
• Implement backend security best practices
• Troubleshoot and resolve production issues
• Collaborate with product, engineering, QA, and business teams
• Align technical solutions with business objectives
• Prepare and maintain technical documentation
• Support the ongoing modernization of the ecommerce platform and microservices adoption

Requirements

• 6+ years of professional Java development experience
• Strong experience with Spring Framework
• Experience with Hibernate or other ORM frameworks
• Hands-on experience with REST, SOAP, gRPC, and/or GraphQL services
• Strong knowledge of MySQL and relational databases
• Experience designing, building, and maintaining APIs
• Experience integrating third-party services and external platforms
• Strong understanding of backend security best practices
• Experience with performance tuning and query optimization
• Proficiency with Git
• Familiarity with AWS
• Experience working in Agile environments (Scrum/Kanban)
• Client-facing experience and direct stakeholder communication
• Consultant mindset with strong business understanding
• Upper-Intermediate/Advanced English

• Experience with SAP Commerce / Hybris

• Experience with event-driven systems and saga patterns
• Experience with high-volume data processing
• Experience supporting both web and mobile platforms
