About the Position

Senior Manager, Legal Counsel - India Legal Team

Location: Mumbai, India - Hybrid (onsite 2-3 days a week)

NIQ India is seeking a talented, enthusiastic, and business-oriented lawyer to join our India Legal team as Senior Manager, Legal Counsel. In this role, you will serve as a strategic legal advisor, partnering closely with business leaders to guide decision-making and enable growth across NIQ’s Commercial business and India Hubs/Centers. Your focus will be on anticipating legal and regulatory developments, partnering on business strategy, and supporting the business in contracting work (clients and vendors) as well as providing counsel that balances innovation with risk management for India business and India Centers/hubs.

Responsibilities

  • Advising Business/leadership on legal and regulatory issues impacting data, employment landscape, analytics, and operations.
  • Providing guidance on governance, compliance, and risk mitigation to strengthen operational resilience.
  • Supporting business teams in navigating the evolving role in the retail and manufacturer landscape.
  • Collaborating across teams to ensure legal considerations are integrated into business planning and execution.
  • Drafting, reviewing, negotiating, and managing contracts, including license agreements, master services agreements, statements of work, data license agreements, and supporting documents.
  • Partnering with the HR team in addressing labor and employment-related queries and matters with legal overlay and collaborating with the Global Labour and Employment (L&E) team as required.
  • Partnering with the HR team in drafting and implementing HR and employment-related policies/guidelines/documents.
  • Collaborating with Global Investigations & L&E teams in people actions, recommendations, etc., and providing advice from the India law perspective.
  • Managing compliance-related queries, including POSH requirements and related advisory, etc. Developing and conducting trainings or awareness sessions on legal and compliance programs or processes, including POSH.
  • Partnering with and providing cross-functional support to global and regional corporate departments (Finance, Tax, Technology/IT, Privacy, Security, Intellectual Property, HR, etc.) for contracting matters and other matters as needed.
  • Identifying gaps and improvement opportunities to ensure consistency in processes, feedback, outputs, and documentation across Commercial and Hubs/Centers in India from a legal perspective.
  • Working with the team in managing litigations (minimal) including ongoing legacy employment matters and coordinating with external lawyers for status, progress, and strategy.
  • Possessing an understanding of privacy laws and frameworks.
  • Being a strong enabler and strategic partner in supporting the implementation of strategy and growth initiatives for commercial operations and hubs.

Requirements

  • Qualified Lawyer/LLB and LLM will be an added advantage.
  • 10+ years of work experience (experience at a law firm and/or MNC in-house is preferred).

  • High attention to detail.
  • Ability to challenge the status quo and suggest new ways of doing things.
  • Demonstrate ability to think and decide quickly, and to communicate legal issues and solutions clearly and concisely to lawyers and non-lawyers alike.
  • Understanding of the need for responsiveness and an eagerness to work directly with internal business teams to answer questions and give guidance as needed.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively in a remote environment, within a globally distributed team, and a fast-paced business environment.
  • Experience in handling employment matters, litigations, and labor advisory.
  • Strong interest in emerging Legal tech/simplification of processes, etc.
  • Maintain a global mindset in performing responsibilities and demonstrate a high degree of initiative with minimal direct supervision.
