Senior Node.js engineer

About the Position

We are seeking a Senior Node.js engineer with 3-8 years of experience to join our EU-based team, specializing in backend development and API design. Our engineers build APIs that other teams want to use, focusing on REST, GraphQL, database design, async processing, and production-grade deployment. We prioritize quality over quantity, ensuring that our engineers understand the full backend picture, from schema design to deployment.

Responsibilities

• REST API and GraphQL: Design and implement APIs using Express, Fastify, NestJS, and Apollo. Ensure consistent error codes, response shapes, and schema-first design.
• Database Design and Integration: Utilize PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and Redis effectively. Focus on query optimization, proper use of transactions, and understanding when a JOIN is better than two queries in application code.
• Authentication and Security: Implement JWT, OAuth 2.0, and session management with a deep understanding of potential pitfalls. Ensure input validation at the API boundary and configure rate limiting, CORS, and security headers.
• Background Jobs and Queues: Use BullMQ, Bull, and Agenda for reliable job processing. Implement job prioritization, concurrency limits, and monitoring.
• Testing: Write unit tests, integration tests, and contract tests. Use Jest, Supertest, Vitest, and test containers for database tests.
• Deployment and Infrastructure: Deploy applications using Docker, Docker Compose, and CI/CD pipelines. Understand AWS services and implement structured logging.
