Senior Node.js Engineer

About the Position

We are looking for a Senior Node.js Engineer to join our team! Our client is a leading Canadian online brokerage and wealth management fintech. It provides retail investors with trading platforms, mobile apps, and investment products in a regulated financial environment.

The Senior Node.js Engineer will join one of the product pods in the Experience Platform engineering group. The role leans toward the back end: you will lead the design and delivery of Node.js/TypeScript services and APIs, and you will also build and ship features on the front end in React and React Native. Each pod owns its domain end to end, so engineers are expected to work across web, mobile, and services.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical design and delivery of complex features and services, documenting architectural trade-offs.
• Design and build Node.js/TypeScript services and RESTful APIs within a microservices or service-oriented architecture.
• Build and maintain front-end features in ReactJS (web) and React Native (mobile) together with the pod.
• Break down large, ambiguous problems into deliverable increments and sequence them with product partners.
• Set and enforce engineering standards for code quality, testing, security, observability, and operational readiness.
• Own performance and scalability of your area: profile, find bottlenecks, and optimize under production load, including real-time data streaming.
• Mentor intermediate and junior developers through code reviews and pairing.
• Partner with Product, UX, Enterprise Architecture, and Security on scalable, resilient, and compliant designs.
• Take part in incident response and on-call rotations, and drive blameless post-incident reviews to closure.
• Explore and adopt AI tools that improve developer productivity.

Requirements

• 6+ years of experience building, shipping, and operating production software.
• 5+ years of hands-on experience with Node.js and TypeScript, including designing APIs, data models, and distributed systems under production load.
• 1+ years of commercial experience with React and/or React Native (Expo or Bare), with readiness to work across web and mobile.
• Proven experience with RESTful APIs and microservices or service-oriented architectures.
• Practical experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases, including query performance tuning.
• Cloud-native experience (GCP preferred; AWS or Azure considered), CI/CD, and containerized workloads.
• Experience leading technical initiatives across several developers without formal authority.
• Strong communication skills in English, able to explain technical trade-offs to engineering and cross-functional audiences.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to Have

• Real-time data streaming technologies (WebSockets, Kafka, Pub/Sub) or low-latency financial/trading systems.
• Kubernetes, Terraform, and other infrastructure-as-code tooling.
• Domain experience in financial services, brokerage, trading, or other regulated environments.
• Experience with AI-boosted tools like Claude Code.
• Knowledge of secure development practices, threat modeling, or DevSecOps.
• Experience building AI/ML-enabled features.
• Angular experience.
