Job description
Software Engineer - API
About the Position
We're on a mission to be a Force For Good, through our People, Products and Purpose at Nuix. This extends to our People. We're fiercely passionate, love working at pace, thrive in ambiguity, live, and breathe outside of the box, and above all are good humans. We're determined to make a positive difference in the world, whether through our solutions which help the top companies, governments and agencies find the truth and combat illegal activities, or through our people who care about contributing and giving back both within, and outside, of Nuix. We are a Force For Good. We're selective about who comes on board, and you should be too. But if the above sounds like a match, get in touch today and get ready for the possibility of starting a once-in-a-career journey.
About the Role
Join the Apical team in Sydney, the squad that designs, builds and maintains the Nuix Platform and Business APIs and the REST SDK that customers, partners and other Nuix product teams use to drive the Nuix Neo platform. Working closely with the Manager of Engineering, the Nuix Product organisation and the scrum team, you will deliver API capability that is secure, well documented and dependable for everyone downstream of it.
As a mid-level Software Engineer you take ownership of user stories, and increasingly of whole features, from design through to release. You write well tested, well styled code, you keep documentation current, and you are an active voice in the wider engineering conversation: backlog grooming, technical design, CI/CD health and customer facing context. You will work alongside Senior and Principal Software Engineers and the architecture group, with clear room to grow into senior scope.
Responsibilities
- Deliver user stories and small features end-to-end, from design through to release, with high quality and minimal rework
- Design, build and maintain secure, scalable REST APIs across the Nuix platform, including request validation, consistent response contracts, versioning and backwards compatibility
- Implement and maintain authentication and authorisation flows, including API key issuance and exchange, token-based authentication and scope-based access control
- Keep API documentation current and usable, including OpenAPI / Swagger definitions and developer-facing guides
- Write meaningful unit and integration tests, and hold the team's coverage and quality gates
- Investigate and fix build and test failures in the CI/CD pipeline, and keep deployment paths healthy across cloud and local deployment environments
- Apply secure coding practices and act on findings from static analysis and dependency scanning tooling
- Break work into small, releasable increments so the team can deliver early and deliver often
- Participate in planning, backlog grooming and technical design discussions across multiple products, providing reasonable estimates and flagging risk early
- Collaborate with architects, QA, DevOps and other product teams to ensure consistency, maximise code reuse and achieve seamless integration between projects
- Share knowledge through documentation, demos and enablement material, and support the onboarding of newer team members
- Perform code reviews with teaching intent, explaining the why and not only the what
- Adopt AI coding assistants effectively to accelerate ramp-up in unfamiliar areas and improve design exploration, and share what works with the team
- Provide maintenance support as scheduled during business hours
Requirements
- Degree in a relevant field such as computer science / engineering, software engineering, machine learning, mathematics or a related quantitative discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Around 3-5 years of professional Java development, including hands-on Spring Boot, building and maintaining production services.
- Experience building REST APIs that other teams or external developers use, including handling versioning, error handling and compatibility.
- A habit of testing your own work (unit and integration) and working through a CI/CD pipeline.
- A practical understanding of API security: authentication versus authorisation, tokens and API keys.
- Solid grasp of testing practices, version control and CI/CD fundamentals, for example Jenkins or an equivalent pipeline tool.
- Familiarity with containerised deployment and infrastructure as code, for example Docker, Kubernetes, Helm or Crossplane, and with API gateways such as Traefik.
Nice to Have
- Experience building software with AI: integrating LLMs, working with MCP or retrieval, or using AI tooling in your daily work.
- Experience in a product or SaaS company shipping APIs to external developers.
- Python or TypeScript.
- Practical understanding of identity and access management concepts such as OAuth2 / OIDC, JWT and API keys. Experience with Keycloak or a comparable identity provider is an advantage.
- Interest in AI and agentic capability, for example MCP servers, semantic search, retrieval or document intelligence, is a strong plus.
- Willingness to assist in the interview process and to mentor junior team members.
We Offer
- Competitive salary
- Opportunity for professional growth
- Collaborative and innovative work environment
- Flexible work arrangements (Hybrid)
