Staff Machine Learning Engineer

About the Position

We are looking for a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to join our team in San Francisco or remotely. At Pinterest, we leverage AI to inspire creativity and amplify our impact. As a Staff Machine Learning Engineer, you will lead the development of complex models and systems, ensuring high code quality and healthy ML infrastructure. You will be responsible for driving improvements in content ranking through AB testing and innovation.

Responsibilities

• Lead multiple technical sub-areas within Growth Content Science.
• Drive improvements in ML models through an AB test-driven innovation loop.
• Ensure the health of our ML ecosystem, including training pipelines, infrastructure, and monitoring.
• Mentor junior engineers and raise the technical excellence bar.
• Collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders to tackle cross-functional initiatives.
• Work closely with engineering leaders to form technical directions and roadmaps.
• Operate autonomously and drive work effectively in complex environments.
• Identify and apply state-of-the-art techniques from recent research.
• Continuously optimize various parts of the work using cutting-edge AI tools.

Requirements

• Graduate degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• Minimum of 8 years of experience in machine learning engineering.
• Expertise in recommender modeling, sequence modeling, and transformer architectures.
• Experience in building and operating high-QPS, latency-constrained ML systems.
• Industry-grade software engineering experience.
• Understanding of content personalization and content quality.
• Experience in leading technical work across teams and making timely decisions.
• Experience in mentoring junior engineers.
• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated experience using AI to improve speed and quality in applied research.
• Strong track record of publications and patents.
