Job Description, Responsibilities & Requirements
About the Position
We are looking for a Strategic Finance Manager, R&D to be the dedicated finance partner to our R&D leadership team. This role is designed for someone who is equal parts strategist, analyst, and operator - comfortable building a forecast model from a blank sheet in the morning and challenging an SVP on the ROI of a roadmap bet in the afternoon.
You'll own the financial story of R&D end to end: headcount planning across a global engineering and product organization, software and vendor spend, and our rapidly growing AI and cloud infrastructure cost base. You'll bring rigor to how we prioritize investments, build the unit economics that explain how our AI products actually make (and cost) money, and partner with R&D leaders to systematically optimize where every dollar lands. You'll also be one of the first finance hires expected to use AI in the work itself – automating repetitive analysis, accelerating model builds, and turning hours of manual reporting into minutes.
This is a hybrid role based in our Amsterdam hub.
Responsibilities
- R&D Financial Planning & Forecasting: Own the end-to-end planning, forecasting, and monthly close commentary for R&D, including headcount, software, and AI/cloud infrastructure spend, with a high bar for forecast accuracy and clear executive narratives.
- Headcount Strategy & Workforce Planning: Partner with R&D leadership and People Operations to model and manage one of the company's largest headcount footprints - building hiring plans, location strategies, and capacity scenarios that balance velocity with discipline.
- AI Cost Strategy & Optimization: Build the unit-economics models that explain our AI cost base (cost per active user, per feature, per inference) and lead cross-functional initiatives with R&D, Procurement, and Infrastructure to drive measurable reductions in unit cost without slowing the roadmap.
- Investment Cases & Strategic Decision Support: Build the financial cases behind major R&D bets - build-vs-buy on AI tooling, model and provider selection, infrastructure commits, and large product investments - and bring a clear recommendation, not just analysis.
- AI-Powered Finance Operations: Act as one of Strategic Finance's leading voices on how to use AI to do our own job better, identifying and prototyping opportunities to automate variance analysis, reporting, and modeling workflows.
- Executive Reporting & Stakeholder Partnership: Prepare board, ELT, and operating-review materials that translate complex R&D economics into clear stories, and act as the trusted finance counterpart to R&D Stream Leads day to day.
Requirements
- 5+ years in strategy/management consulting, investment banking, strategic FP&A, BizOps, or corporate strategy, ideally with exposure to a high-growth SaaS or cloud-native business.
- Advanced financial modeling skills (forecasting, scenario analysis, unit economics, cohort analysis) and the ability to triangulate insights across messy, multi-source data.
- Demonstrated experience partnering with senior technical stakeholders (engineering, product, infrastructure leaders) and influencing decisions without authority.
- Strong interest in - and ideally hands-on familiarity with - AI/cloud cost dynamics and using AI tools to make finance work faster and better.
- Exceptional communication skills: you can take a complex financial topic and turn it into a one-pager an SVP can act on.
- Bias to action and comfort with ambiguity; you frame the problem yourself before solving it.
- Familiarity with SaaS business models and subscription revenue dynamics.
