The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) offers a full-time technical assistant position funded by the ESA WEED (World Ecosystem Extent Dynamics) project, as part of Research Line 6 (RL6) ARIES. The successful candidate will contribute to the ESA WEED project, which aims to develop a globally applicable open-source toolbox leveraging Earth Observation (EO) data to generate comprehensive maps of terrestrial, freshwater, and coastal ecosystem extent types and their temporal variations.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development of the ARIES/k.LAB-based toolbox for ecosystem extent mapping at a global scale.
  • Support the integration of the ARIES semantics platform with the OpenEO Earth Observation processing platform.
  • Process and harmonize EO-derived datasets to produce ecosystem extent maps and their temporal dynamics across terrestrial, freshwater, and coastal ecosystem types.
  • Contribute to model development, semantic annotation, and data integration workflows within the ARIES platform.
  • Support compliance with FAIR principles and interoperability standards in the design and delivery of the toolbox.
  • Collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary, multicultural, and multi-location team of scientific collaborators, including ESA project partners.

Requirements

  • Education: Master’s degree in Computer Science, Geomatics, Ecoinformatics, Geography, Ecology, Environmental Sciences, or a related field.
  • ARIES/k.LAB Experience: Experience working with the ARIES platform and k.LAB software is strongly preferred.
  • ESA Project Experience: Experience in projects with the European Space Agency (ESA) or in ESA-funded Earth Observation initiatives is strongly preferred.
  • Domain Knowledge: Familiarity with Natural Capital Accounting (NCA) frameworks and ecosystem classification typologies (e.g. IUCN GET, SEEA-EA).
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in EO data processing, GIS, and scripting (e.g. Python, R); experience with cloud-based EO platforms such as OpenEO or Google Earth Engine is a plus.
  • Language: Excellent written and oral command of English (Spanish and other languages are a plus).
  • Work Style: Ability to work independently within a diverse and multi-lingual team.

We Offer

  • Interdisciplinary and inspiring work environment
  • Quiet and spacious workspaces
  • Possibility of participating in internal training and academic activities of the center
  • 35-hour week work calendar
  • 30 days of vacation per year
