About the Position

We are currently seeking a highly motivated Scientist I_CO to join a well-known client in South San Francisco, CA. This role will support the development, characterization, and qualification of advanced human lung in vitro models to enable safe and effective drug development. This position offers a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of organotypic modeling and translational safety, contributing to cutting-edge therapeutic programs across diverse modalities and disease areas.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, qualify, and implement advanced lung complex in vitro models (CIVM), including organoids, air liquid interface (ALI) cultures, and lung on a chip systems.
  • Culture and characterize lung cell models, including primary cells and cell lines, to support disease modeling and safety assessment.
  • Design and execute experiments to evaluate model performance, including cell viability, morphology, barrier integrity, and function.
  • Utilize advanced techniques such as cytotoxicity assays, confocal and high content imaging, transepithelial resistance/permeability assays, transcriptomics, and proteomics.
  • Analyze and interpret complex datasets and clearly communicate results to cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with internal and external research teams to align model development with therapeutic strategies and program needs.
  • Maintain comprehensive electronic documentation in accordance with SOPs and quality standards.
  • Contribute to study reports, safety assessments, and internal/external scientific presentations and publications.
  • Support innovation and continuous improvement in complex in vitro modeling platforms.

Requirements

  • PhD with 0–5 years of postdoctoral or industry experience in bioengineering, cell biology, molecular biology, toxicology, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in hypothesis-driven research in academic or industry settings.
  • Proven expertise in developing and applying organoids, co-culture systems, or microphysiological/microfluidic platforms.
  • Hands-on experience culturing lung cell types, including primary cells and relevant cell lines.
  • Strong background in analytical techniques such as qRT-PCR, RNA-seq, proteomics, immunofluorescence, confocal microscopy, and high content imaging.
  • Experience in experimental design, troubleshooting, method development, and protocol optimization for complex biological systems.

Nice to Have

  • Background in lung biology and/or immunology.
  • Experience with computational tools such as MATLAB and/or Python for image analysis and large-scale data processing.
