About the Position

Application Engineer (m/w/d) - Robotik & Automatisierung

Location: Paderborn, Nordrhein-Westfalen, DE

Employment Type: FULL_TIME

About the Company

Unchained Robotics simplifies access to automation with robotics solutions for companies across Europe. We believe that automation technology should not be rocket science, yet many small and medium-sized enterprises still do not benefit from it. We offer three strong solution components:

  • Our online configurator allows companies to create and evaluate customized automation solutions.
  • Our cross-brand marketplace offers a wide range of robots, grippers, and cameras from leading manufacturers.
  • Our turnkey solutions provide prefabricated robot cells designed for numerous standard applications in industrial automation, which can be implemented particularly quickly. This is what we call simplified automation.

Join us and become part of the team! We are looking forward to meeting you!

About the Position

Unchained Robotics develops and integrates modern automation solutions for industrial companies across Europe. Since our founding in 2019 in Paderborn, we have supported over 200 customers in more than 20 countries in making their production more efficient with robotics.

As an Application Engineer, you will realize demanding robotics and automation solutions for industrial production environments.

You will not only program individual robots via their manufacturer-specific control systems. With Python and our automation framework LUNA, you will develop manufacturer-independent applications that connect robots, PLCs, vision systems, sensors, and other components into a high-performance overall solution.

LUNA forms the central software layer of our automation solutions. The framework allows us to control different robot systems and automation components uniformly, configure processes flexibly, and transfer already developed functions as reusable software components to new projects.

You will work with various robot systems such as KUKA, Nachi, Universal Robots, or FANUC and accompany our customer projects from development and internal commissioning to successful production release. Depending on your experience, you will take responsibility for complete systems or technical sub-projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Python Development with LUNA: Develop robust applications in Python for our manufacturer-independent automation framework LUNA and implement customer-specific robotics processes.
  • Robot Programming: Program and optimize applications for different robot systems such as Universal Robots, FANUC, KUKA, or Yaskawa.
  • System Integration: Integrate robots, PLCs, sensors, vision systems, and other peripheral devices into LUNA and ensure the reliable interaction of all components.
  • Commissioning and Project Responsibility: Accompany projects from internal commissioning through FAT and SAT to successful go-live at the customer site.
  • Debugging and Optimization: Analyze errors across software, robot, and system boundaries and develop sustainable solutions for stable system operation.
  • Software Development and Standardization: Develop reusable Python modules, interfaces, and software components and bring your project experience into the further development of LUNA.
  • Simulation and Technical Project Development: Validate robotics applications using simulation tools and support the technical evaluation of new customer projects.

Requirements

  • Completed vocational training, degree, or comparable practical experience in robotics, automation technology, mechatronics, computer science, or a similar technical field.
  • Several years of practical experience in programming and commissioning industrial robots or automation systems.
  • Solid experience with at least one industrial robot system, e.g., Universal Robots, FANUC, KUKA, or Yaskawa.
  • Solid knowledge of Python and experience in the structured development, maintenance, and error analysis of software.
  • Basic proficiency in using Linux.
  • Experience in integrating automation components, e.g., PLCs, sensors, vision systems, or industrial interfaces.
  • Structured approach to troubleshooting, debugging, and system optimization.
  • Very good German language skills, a class B driver's license, and willingness to travel regularly to customer sites.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with multiple robot manufacturers.
  • Experience with modular software development, reusable Python components, or APIs.
  • Knowledge of PLC systems such as Siemens TIA Portal, Beckhoff TwinCAT, or Codesys.
  • Experience with RoboDK, Visual Components, or similar simulation tools.
  • Technical responsibility for FAT, SAT, or production starts.

We Offer

  • 32 vacation days – Because recreation is just as important as performance.
  • On-site/customer work environment & Home Office option – Close cooperation with engineering, assembly, and project management at the Paderborn site and customer sites for quick exchange and effective coordination – supplemented by the possibility to work partially from home.
  • Modern work equipment – We provide everything you need to be successful.
  • Team events – Regular events that strengthen team spirit.
  • Fitness & Wellbeing – Use corporate fitness with WellPass and benefit from a masseur coming to our office several times a month.
  • Financial benefits – Benefit from employee discounts through our Corporate Benefits platform and local providers.
  • CSR – Dedicate 1% of your working time to social projects and make the world a better place.
  • Free drinks and snacks – You are well taken care of with us.
