British American Tobacco UK has an exciting opportunity for an IN VITRO TOXICOLOGY SCIENTIST in Southampton

Key Objectives and Expectations

The role will be responsible for producing preclinical data across all BAT product categories. The primary purpose of preclinical data is to satisfy BAT’s duty of care by substantiating consumer product safety, meeting regulatory obligations and providing scientific substantiation of health-related claims such as reduced risk versus cigarettes.

The pre-clinical screening and evaluation capabilities will be applied to support BAT’s harm reduction strategy including evaluation of e-cigarettes, heated products, and nicotine pouches, enabling product launches and supporting a competitive product pipeline.

This role directly delivers BAT’s core purpose of A Better Tomorrow, via the science and technical framework to reduce the public health impact of our business.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the execution and reporting of in vitro Regulatory (Genetic) Toxicology data to achieve business unit goals and to support the Regulatory Toxicology team to develop, deliver and ensure fit-for-purpose testing capabilities and defined requirements to support Quality Growth - product innovation and Product Lifecycle Management, and Sustainable Future THR sciences and regulatory engagement.
• Ensure that data generated are timely, fit for purpose and meeting the appropriate quality requirements (data standards, RDRT) and business needs, harnessing approaches aligned to the digital transformation roadmap.
• Maintain clear ways of working and adherence to key processes, providing clear technical leadership, maintaining a culture of continuous improvement.
• Support in the authoring and delivery of R&S reports, internal and external publications and presentations.
• Application of competitor landscape in the field of preclinical science and in vitro Regulatory Toxicology and application of project management and planning.
• Maintenance and running of relevant laboratory requirements to support the pre-clinical team.
• Support approved procedures/processes to ensure ‘Best Practice’ is followed e.g. HTA; GLP & EH&S.
• Complete tasks in accordance with BAT Research and Science business strategy and the code of business conduct.

Requirements

Experience Required

• Experience and technical knowledge of in vitro Regulatory Toxicology to enable the in-house development of Neutral Red, Ames and in vitro micronucleus testing capabilities.
• Knowledge of applying bioinformatics tools to process and assess biological data, and meeting appropriate data quality standards.
• Experience of preclinical approaches in a controlled quality assured environment such GIVIMP/ GxP compliant laboratory.
• Ability to author and deliver R&S technical reports, conference materials and contributions to external peer-reviewed Manuscripts.
• Expertise in basic IT skills (Word/ Excel/ Power Point) and data analysis packages.
• Willingness to learn and ability to apply knowledge in a range of novel in vitro biology / toxicology methodologies.

Technical / Functional / Leadership Skills Required

• Experience in execution of in vitro studies.
• Study design, analysis, and data interpretation in a relevant field.
• Ability to communicate scientific concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Desire to learn new techniques and develop their technical skills.

Education / Qualifications / Certifications Required

• Relevant professional/academic achievement equivalent Degree in Biological Sciences or related science.

Nice to Have

• Practical experience in mammalian cell culture.
• Development and application of 96-well cellular assays (ELISA, MTT, NRU or similar).
• Working knowledge of BAT products and / or testing of aerosols.
