About the Position

Senior AI/ML Solution Design Engineer

Our client is an early-stage, Melbourne-based AI product company building an AI copilot for tender and bid teams in Australia and New Zealand. The platform ingests complex tender documents and a company’s own content library, tracks every compliance requirement, and drafts responses grounded in verified evidence with page- and section-level citations. When information is missing, it flags the gap for a human expert instead of inventing content. The product serves government, infrastructure, utilities, healthcare and defence bids, so accuracy, traceability and security (ISO 27001, SOC 2, IRAP, Australian data residency) are core design requirements, not afterthoughts.

Responsibilities

• Run technical discovery with the founders and domain experts, turning bid-process requirements into clear solution designs.
• Design the end-to-end architecture of LLM-powered features: document ingestion, retrieval, generation, citation and human review.
• Build and prototype in Python, taking features from proof of concept to production-grade code.
• Design data architecture and pipelines for parsing large, messy documents (PDF, Word, Excel, tables) into a searchable knowledge library.
• Build production RAG with precise source attribution, so every generated claim links back to the exact page and section.
• Design agentic workflows and LLM orchestration, including multi-step reasoning, tool use and gap detection.
• Select and run vector databases and hybrid search, tuning chunking, embeddings and reranking for accuracy.
• Set up evaluation frameworks for retrieval quality, faithfulness and hallucination, and use them to drive improvements.
• Implement observability and LLMOps/MLOps: tracing, monitoring, cost and latency tracking, prompt and model versioning, CI/CD.
• Deploy on Azure or AWS with security in mind: tenant isolation, encryption and data residency.
• Write concise technical documentation: architecture decisions, data flows and runbooks.

Requirements

• 6+ years in software or ML engineering, including 2+ years building LLM / GenAI applications.
• At least one production RAG or LLM system you personally designed and delivered, used by real users, that you can walk through in detail.
• Strong Python for production code (FastAPI or similar, async, testing, clean architecture).
• Hands-on experience with LLM orchestration (e.g. LangChain, LangGraph, LlamaIndex, Semantic Kernel or custom) and agentic workflows.
• Hands-on experience with vector databases and retrieval (e.g. pgvector, Pinecone, Weaviate, Qdrant, Azure AI Search, OpenSearch).
• Production deployments on Azure or AWS.
• Practical experience with LLM evaluation and observability (e.g. Ragas, DeepEval, LangSmith, Langfuse, Arize/Phoenix, custom eval sets).
• Experience building document-processing pipelines for complex, unstructured documents.
• Clear written and spoken English; able to explain trade-offs to non-technical founders and work independently.

Nice to Have

• Experience with LegalTech, GovTech, compliance, procurement or other document-heavy, regulated domains.
• Citation-grounded or “no hallucination” generation, e.g. claim-level source linking or answer verification.
• Security and compliance work for enterprise SaaS (ISO 27001, SOC 2, multi-tenant data isolation).
• Early-stage startup experience or acting as the first or lead AI engineer.
• Infrastructure as code (Terraform, Bicep), Docker and Kubernetes.
• Fine-tuning or working with open-source models alongside commercial APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure OpenAI, Bedrock).
