Job description

Description language:

About the Position

We’re looking for a Senior Rust Engineer to join our client, a global digital content and knowledge company whose products help billions of people across the globe move beyond access and into insight, application, and expertise.

As a Senior Rust Engineer, you will join the Content Library team – the team behind the unified storage and governance platform that powers content across all four products. The platform handles hundreds of billions of objects in AWS S3 and serves products used by hundreds of millions of users every month.

You will work on core infrastructure at massive scale, from low-level Rust services for storage, transformation, and retrieval to the governance layer responsible for lineage, access control, and deletion. This is a deeply hands-on role with end-to-end ownership, working alongside the platform’s architect and lead engineer and helping shape the technical direction of the system.

Must-have for the position

  • 6+ years of professional software engineering experience;
  • Strong production-level experience with Rust;
  • Experience with Apache Arrow – columnar in-memory data processing;
  • Experience with Apache Parquet – columnar storage format;
  • Experience with Apache DataFusion – query execution engine;
  • Strong experience with PostgreSQL and/or MySQL;
  • Experience working with AWS S3 at scale;
  • Experience with AWS Lambda;
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems and large-scale storage systems.

Will be a strong plus

  • Experience with Python;
  • Experience with AWS ECS and Aurora;
  • Experience with Terraform;
  • Experience optimizing query execution, caching, database performance, and infrastructure costs;
  • Experience with data governance, lineage tracking, access control, or deletion workflows;
  • Experience using agentic AI development tools such as Claude Code.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and evolve core Rust services responsible for content storage, transformations, and retrieval;
  • Build and optimize data processing functionality using Apache Arrow, Apache Parquet, and Apache DataFusion;
  • Improve query execution performance, caching strategies, database performance, and infrastructure cost efficiency;
  • Build and maintain the governance layer, including data lineage, access control, and deletion propagation;
  • Work with large-scale object storage environments containing hundreds of billions of AWS S3 objects;
  • Contribute to the Python-based userland and transformation framework used for cross-team contributions;
  • Own features end-to-end, from technical design and implementation through deployment and production operations;
  • Improve observability, reliability, and operational excellence of the Content Library platform;
  • Participate in on-call and production operations;
  • Use agentic AI tools as part of the development workflow while maintaining strong human ownership of quality and security decisions.

About the Project

The Content Library is the client’s unified storage and governance platform for content across 4 big e-book & audiobooks platforms.

The platform manages nearly 20 years of accumulated content, handles hundreds of billions of objects in AWS S3, and supports products serving hundreds of millions of users every month.

Content Library solves several complex infrastructure problems at massive scale:

  • Transactional content storage;
  • Dataset transformations with lineage tracking;
  • Low-latency content retrieval;
  • Access control and content governance;
  • Content deletion and deletion propagation.

The core platform is built in Rust, using Apache Arrow, Apache Parquet, and Apache DataFusion. A Python layer provides a userland and transformation framework that enables engineers from other teams to contribute to the platform.

The team follows an end-to-end feature ownership model: engineers participate in design, implementation, deployment, observability, and production operations.

Development is also AI-augmented. Agentic development tools such as Claude Code are integrated into the engineering workflow, while engineers remain responsible for understanding, reviewing, and owning the quality and security of what they ship.

This is an opportunity to work alongside the platform’s architect and lead engineer, influence the technical direction of the Content Library, and solve distributed storage and data processing problems at significant scale.

Tech Stack

  • Core language: Rust;
  • Secondary language: Python;
  • Data ecosystem: Apache Arrow, Apache Parquet, Apache DataFusion;
  • Databases: PostgreSQL, Aurora, MySQL;
  • Object storage: AWS S3;
  • Cloud: AWS – S3, Lambda, ECS, Aurora;
