About the Team
As we expand our Patient Cloud suite of applications, we are seeking an experienced technologist to lead the architectural evolution of our patient-facing mobile and web applications.
As a Senior Staff Systems Architect, you will be the technical cornerstone of our patient and site-facing digital experiences. You will design and govern solutions which span native mobile applications (iOS/Android), responsive web portals, and the robust API layer that connects them to our core clinical data platform.
You will operate at the intersection of complex clinical workflows and consumer-grade user experiences, ensuring our applications are highly performant, accessible, offline-capable, and strictly compliant with global healthcare regulations (HIPAA, GDPR, FDA 21 CFR Part 11). This role will report to Patient Experience Director, Architecture.
Your Mission
- Architect the Future: Design a scalable, resilient, and unified frontend and mobile architecture that enables seamless patient participation in clinical trials-whether from their own device (BYOD) or a provisioned clinic tablet.
- Bridge the Stack: Establish the API contracts and micro-frontend/backend-for-frontend (BFF) strategies that allow our mobile and web apps to ingest and transmit critical health data securely and instantly.
- Drive Engineering Excellence: Act as a force multiplier. Mentor staff and senior engineers, set technical standards, and lead cross-functional architecture reviews to eliminate technical debt and ensure cohesive integration across our global platform.
- Champion Site Reliability: Drive an SRE culture across product engineering. Build systems that fail gracefully, recover instantly, and guarantee zero data loss, ensuring the platform is as reliable as the medical care it supports.
Key Responsibilities
- Resilient Mobile & Web Client Architecture: Define the architectural roadmap for a unified client infrastructure spanning mobile and web, focusing on robust state management, seamless data flows, and consistent, high-performance rendering across all patient touchpoints.
- API & Integration Strategy: Design scalable, secure, and versioned APIs and event-driven architectures to bridge patient-facing apps with backend clinical data storage and AI engines.
- Observability & Site Reliability (SRE): Architect comprehensive telemetry and performance monitoring across mobile and web to drive a proactive SRE culture. Define SLOs, SLIs, and error budgets backed by distributed tracing and crash reporting. Coach the team on incident response best practices.
- Security & Compliance: Embed "security-by-design" principles to ensure encryption at rest and in transit, robust identity/access management (SSO, OAuth2), and compliance with strict regulatory frameworks (GCP, HIPAA).
- Cross-Functional Leadership: Partner closely with Product Management, UX/UI, Security, and Cloud Infrastructure teams to translate complex business and regulatory requirements into elegant technical solutions.
Qualifications & Skills
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 4+ years acting at the Staff level overseeing mobile and web domains.
- Mobile Expertise: Deep technical understanding of the mobile ecosystem, including native app development, cross-platform considerations, app store deployment architectures, and mobile security.
- Web & API Mastery: Mastery of RESTful API principles and backend API design (Ruby on Rails, .NET, Node.js, Java, Go). Experience with modern front end web frameworks (React, Vue, or Angular).
- Cloud Infrastructure: Hands-on architectural experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Systems Thinking: Proven ability to design complex distributed systems with high availability, fault tolerance, and eventual consistency.
- Communication: Exceptional ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both engineering teams and non-technical executive stakeholders.
We Offer
- Compensation: The salary range for positions that will be physically based in New York will be $157,500-$200,000.
- Benefits: Medidata provides a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, life and disability insurance, 401(k) matching, family leave, flexible paid time off, and 10 paid holidays per year.
