About the Role

As an AI Engineer/Developer (all genders) at MAI Group, you will bring AI solutions for our clients from the initial prototype to stable production. You will think not only in models and architectures but also in how new technology can be seamlessly integrated into existing systems and teams. You will work closely with our PHP and Java development teams, consultants, and client IT, and be the technical voice when it comes to what is feasible today and what is worth building tomorrow. Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain productive AI solutions for our clients from the initial idea to stable operation
Design suitable architectures around LLMs, RAG, and agent-based systems, making informed technical decisions
Integrate AI into existing web applications, data landscapes, and business processes of our clients
Implement technical concepts together with our PHP and Java development teams, ensuring smooth interaction in the code
Ensure the quality, security, maintainability, and cost-effectiveness of the solutions you develop
Transition solutions into production and support them long-term – technically maintained, monitored, and further developed
Evaluate new models, frameworks, and technologies based on their practical benefits
Coordinate technically with consultants, client IT, and departments, translating between requirements and implementation
Contribute to our development standards, architectural principles, and reusable components, and develop them further

Requirements

Several years of experience in software development or AI/ML engineering
Practical experience in developing and operating LLM-based applications
Ability to work independently on architectures and implement technical concepts securely
Solid backend skills and practical knowledge in PHP and/or Java
Experience with APIs, databases, and integration of existing systems
Understanding of central LLM concepts such as prompting, embeddings, retrieval, tool calling, and evaluation
Solid engineering practices with Git, automated testing, Docker, and CI/CD
Experience with observability, error analysis, and the further development of productive applications
Understanding of technical trade-offs in scaling, security, and operational costs, and incorporating them into your decisions
Structured, pragmatic, and independent working style
Ability to communicate technical matters clearly; your German is at C1 level

Nice to Have

Experience with TYPO3, Shopware, Magento, or WordPress
Python and corresponding backend and AI frameworks, such as FastAPI or LangGraph
AI integration in the Java environment, such as with Spring AI
Experience with vector databases and knowledge graphs, such as pgvector, Qdrant, or Neo4j
Kubernetes and experience with self-operated LLMs and inference stacks like vLLM or Ollama
Experience with tools for LLM evaluation and observability, such as Langfuse
Experience in regulated industries and with data protection and AI governance
Very good English skills
