Lead Java Developer

About the Position

Onwelo is a technology partner delivering end-to-end services, from strategy and architecture through implementation to maintenance, across digital transformation, data, and automation initiatives. Our team consists of more than 400 specialists with strong senior-level expertise, and we have successfully delivered over 300 projects for large organizations across Poland, Europe, and the United States. We are looking for a Lead Software Engineer (Java) to take on the role of technical leader for a team of 5-7 developers. The project is delivered within an enterprise environment, leveraging modern cloud-native architecture and engineering practices that support high-quality, highly available solutions. Hybrid working model: 25% of working time spent onsite at the client's office in Scotland.

In this role, you will be responsible for defining the team's technical direction, supporting developers' growth, and collaborating closely with Product and Engineering teams to deliver scalable business solutions.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership for a team of 5-7 developers.
• Make architectural and technology-related decisions.
• Take ownership of solution quality and software engineering standards.
• Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams on planning and delivering initiatives.
• Mentor, support, and develop team members.
• Promote engineering best practices, including Code Reviews, Pair Programming, TDD, BDD, and CI/CD.
• Support the development of secure and highly available cloud-based systems.

Requirements

• At least 7 years of commercial software development experience.
• Experience as a Lead Software Engineer, Tech Lead, or Engineering Lead.
• Experience leading teams working in Agile environments.
• Experience designing and delivering highly available enterprise solutions.
• Experience mentoring and developing software engineers.
• Fluent communication skills in both Polish and English (minimum B2 level).

We Offer

• Hybrid working model: 25% of working time spent onsite at the client's office in Scotland, with the onsite schedule agreed jointly with the client. Onsite work may be organized either on a regular basis or through consolidated business trips, provided that the average onsite commitment remains at around 25% of total working time. The remaining time can be worked remotely from Poland, the United Kingdom (UK), or another EU country.
• A project planned for approximately 12 months.
