Lead Kubernetes Platform Engineer

We are hiring a Lead Kubernetes Platform Engineer for a platform and cloud engineering consultancy that builds and runs modern cloud platforms for clients across the public and private sectors. The company gives engineering teams a way to ship and run software safely at scale, backed by automation, strong governance, and tooling that makes developers self-sufficient.

Salary: €5,500-7,200 per month

Location: 100% Remote

Employment Type: Full-time position

Responsibilities

• Lead and line-manage a team of platform engineers, owning their development, performance, and day-to-day delivery
• Set the technical roadmap and architectural standards for Kubernetes platforms reused across customer engagements
• Stand up and run production Kubernetes on AWS, taking full ownership of self-managed clusters down to the control plane, etcd, and node lifecycle, rather than relying only on managed services
• Act as the senior escalation point for major incidents and high-risk changes
• Run the full operational lifecycle: version upgrades, security patches, rotating certificates and credentials, planning capacity, and responding to incidents
• Engineer resilience across clusters spanning several AWS regions, with etcd backups and recovery routines that are tested regularly
• Write custom operators and controllers that capture how the platform should behave and let development teams serve themselves
• Connect Kubernetes to the surrounding AWS services: VPC networking and load balancers, IAM through IRSA or Pod Identity, storage, and secrets handling
• Define a security baseline that holds by default, covering RBAC, admission control, policy enforcement, network policy, and supply-chain protection

Requirements

• Strong, practical command with 7+ years of experience of how Kubernetes works internally and how to administer it, not just operate it as a user
• Proven track record building and running production clusters on AWS, owning self-managed setups end to end rather than leaning only on EKS
• Experience leading and line-managing platform or infrastructure engineering teams, owning their growth and delivery
• A history of setting technical strategy, architectural standards, and technology choices across multiple projects or customers
• A clear mental model of how the control plane behaves and fails, across kube-apiserver, etcd, kube-scheduler, and kube-controller-manager, plus the node-side kubelet, kube-proxy, and the containerd runtime
• Real operational experience with etcd: managing quorum and membership, running compaction and defragmentation, and handling backup and restore
• Comfortable across AWS and the way Kubernetes sits on it: IAM, IRSA or Pod Identity, VPC design, load balancers, and autoscaling with Cluster Autoscaler and Karpenter
• Strong CI/CD background and fluency with GitOps
• Hands-on building operators and controllers with CRDs and controller-runtime, plus the admission webhook tooling
• Confident running day-2 work: upgrades that respect version skew, patching, certificate rotation, capacity planning, and incident handling
• Strong stakeholder skills, comfortable managing senior and enterprise client relationships

• Kubernetes certification (CKA, CKS, or CKAD)
• AWS certification (Solutions Architect Associate or Professional, Advanced Networking Specialty)
• Go proficiency for controller and tooling work
• Networking depth: CNI plugins (Calico, Cilium, AWS VPC CNI), Ingress and Gateway API, service meshes (Istio, Linkerd), network policy
• Security tooling: RBAC, Pod Security Standards, policy engines (OPA/Gatekeeper, Kyverno), supply-chain security (Sigstore/cosign), CIS Benchmark hardening
• Observability stack: Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, centralized logging
• IaC and config management: Terraform, Helm, Kustomize
