Job description
About the Position
We are looking for a Sr. Software Engineer, Cloud Platform to join our team in a remote role based in London, United Kingdom. At Samsara, we are the pioneers of the Connected Operations™ Cloud, a platform that enables organizations to harness IoT data for actionable insights and improved operations. As a Senior Engineer in the Infrastructure org, you will help evolve the cloud foundations behind every Samsara product, aiming to reduce systemic production risk and enable continued growth.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate reliable cloud platforms, specializing in areas such as compute, networking, storage, stateful systems, or infrastructure control planes.
- Improve the scalability, capacity management, isolation, recovery, and cost efficiency of critical production infrastructure.
- Build standardized infrastructure-as-code workflows and reusable automation for self-service provisioning, testing, progressive rollout, reconciliation, rollback, and drift prevention.
- Identify shared failure modes and build safeguards to prevent localized failures from escalating into broad customer impact.
- Contribute to multi-account, multi-region, and isolated AWS architectures, including regulated environments such as GovCloud.
- Participate in operational ownership and incident response, using incidents and near misses to drive durable architectural improvements.
- Mentor engineers, raise the quality of infrastructure design and operational judgment, and establish patterns that can be adopted across the organization.
- Clearly communicate architecture, trade-offs, risks, and migration plans to technical and organizational stakeholders.
- Champion, role model, and embed Samsara’s cultural principles as we scale globally and across new offices.
Requirements
-
Minimum Requirements:
- 6+ years of experience designing and building software, infrastructure, or distributed systems, including operating critical systems in production.
- Deep expertise in at least one of the following: compute and workload orchestration, networking, storage and stateful systems, or cloud infrastructure control planes.
- Strong software-engineering fundamentals in Go, Python, Java, or a similar language.
- Hands-on experience designing and operating infrastructure on a major public cloud platform; AWS experience is preferred.
- Experience using infrastructure as code, such as Terraform, to safely manage production infrastructure.
- Strong understanding of capacity management, failure domains, observability, rollout safety, and production recovery.
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical initiatives across teams and through ambiguous problem spaces.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
-
Ideal Candidate:
- Experience designing and operating large-scale compute or container platforms such as ECS, EKS, Kubernetes, or similar orchestration systems.
- Experience designing and operating stateful distributed systems such as Kafka, OpenSearch, managed databases, caching, or large-scale storage platforms.
- Experience building internal infrastructure platforms, control planes, or self-service developer experiences adopted across multiple teams.
- Experience designing multi-account or multi-region cloud architectures with strong workload isolation and disaster recovery.
- Experience leading major infrastructure migrations while maintaining availability and controlling operational risk.
- Experience delivering measurable improvements in infrastructure capacity, cost efficiency, or developer self-service.
