Staff Software Engineer, Maps Services
Primary stack
Job description
About the Position
We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer, Maps Services to join our team at Samsara. This role is remote and open to candidates based in the US. Maps are integral to nearly everything we build at Samsara. The Maps team is building the shared geospatial platform that makes that possible. We source, ingest, enrich, and serve the map data that Samsara's product teams use every day. When our data and APIs are accurate, reliable, and easy to use, every team building location-aware experiences at Samsara moves faster.
Responsibilities
- Shape the technical direction of the Maps teams
- Build geospatial systems and integrations that support foundational features across most Samsara products
- Scale our offerings to continue to support storage, query, and computational load of the real-time features dependent on them
- Consolidate existing team-specific geospatial solutions into scalable platform-wide offerings
- Build agentic solutions that allow our customers to self-serve the data they want to see how they want to see it
- Raise the technical bar through code reviews, design discussions, and mentorship
- Partner with engineering leadership on the bets worth making, and be honest about tradeoffs
- Represent Samsara externally when it makes sense - talks, open source, community engagement with the mapping/geospatial ecosystem
- Live out our cultural principles: Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, and Win as a Team
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
- 8+ years building software, with at least 2 years in an architect or technical leadership role
- Strong programming and design fundamentals
- 4+ years working on large-scale distributed systems
- 4+ years leading technical projects across multiple teams
Nice to Have
- Experience with GIS technologies and spatial analysis, including PostGIS, spatial SQL, GeoPandas/Shapely, QGIS, and geospatial data validation
- Familiarity with geospatial data formats and open mapping ecosystems, including GeoParquet, OpenStreetMap (OSM), and OSM PBF; experience ingesting, transforming, validating, or serving these datasets
- Comfort working in ambiguity and getting teams aligned without needing formal authority
Salary
The range of annual base salary for full-time employees for this position is $162,400-$290,000 USD. Please note that base pay offered may vary depending on factors including your city of residence, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This role is also eligible for an initial RSU grant with no vesting cliff, and ongoing refresh opportunities tied to performance, subject to plan terms and conditions.
We Offer
At Samsara, we build for the people who keep the global economy moving. We want owners, not passengers, which is why our rewards are designed to fuel high-impact builders. Our compensation program delivers above-market total compensation through a combination of base salary, performance-based bonus/variable pay, and equity (for eligible roles) in a high-growth public company. We meaningfully differentiate pay for our top performers, who have the opportunity to earn above-market compensation that can outpace the broader market over time.
Beyond compensation, we provide the foundations that enable long-term success: a flexible, employee-led remote model, a professional development stipend, comprehensive health and parental leave plans, and more.
