About the Position
Accounting Manager
Location: Tokyo, Japan
Department: Finance and Analytics
Box is seeking an Accounting Manager for its Tokyo office to manage financial and accounting operations, ensuring compliance with laws and regulations.
Responsibilities
- Execute and manage daily accounting tasks (general ledger, accounts payable, expense management, fixed assets, prepayments, cash management)
- Prepare journal entries, identify and resolve discrepancies or errors, lead monthly and annual closings, balance reconciliation, and variance analysis (P&L, balance sheet)
- Prepare and submit statutory financial statements and tax filings in accordance with Japanese laws (in collaboration with a tax advisor)
- Handle audit responses (internal audit, SOX, external audit) and prepare audit materials
- Propose and implement process improvements, business automation, and system enhancements, and strengthen accounting controls
- Collaborate with related departments (payroll, finance, legal, sales, etc.) and headquarters to drive business operations
- Participate in ad-hoc tasks and projects as needed

Requirements
Education & Certifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related fields (preferred)
- CPA (Japan or US) certification required
Required Experience
- 5+ years of accounting experience in multinational/global companies
- Proficient in US GAAP and Japanese accounting standards
- Experience with SOX compliance and internal audits
- Experience in accounting tasks (accounts payable, fixed asset management, etc.)
- Experience with ERP/expense systems such as NetSuite, Coupa, Concur, Zuora (preferred)
- Experience with Japanese statutory reporting and tax compliance (preferred)
- Experience managing small teams (preferred)
Required Skills
- Fluent in Japanese (reading, writing, speaking) and business-level English (reading, writing, speaking) to communicate with stakeholders in both languages
- Excellent teamwork, time management, documentation, and verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and think creatively
- Deep understanding of US GAAP and knowledge of SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley Act)
- Knowledge of Japanese tax laws (J-tax) is a plus
- Proficiency in Excel and experience with NetSuite, Concur, Blackline, Coupa is a plus
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage workload in a busy environment
- Team-oriented with a collaborative approach to work
- High ethical standards and integrity when handling confidential information
- Proactive in identifying and resolving issues
