Chief Accountant

The Chief Accountant is responsible for the integrity, accuracy, and compliance of all financial and accounting reporting activities, ensuring full compliance with Romanian statutory requirements, tax regulations, and BAT Group policies. The role leads the accounting function, supports business decision-making, and maintains a strong internal control environment within a complex manufacturing and excise-duty business.

Responsibilities

Financial Accounting & Reporting:

• Lead all accounting activities and statutory reporting processes.
• Oversee month-end and year-end closing, reconciliations, financial statements, and audits.
• Ensure compliance with Romanian accounting standards, tax legislation, BAT policies, and internal controls.
• Coordinate relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory authorities.

Tax & Compliance:

• Ensure compliance with corporate income tax, VAT, excise duties, and other tax obligations.
• Review and approve tax declarations and statutory filings.
• Monitor legislative changes and manage tax risks.
• Act as key contact for fiscal authorities and support tax audits and inspections.
• Manage fiscal warehouse licenses and VAT fiscal representation responsibilities.

Internal Controls & Governance:

• Support SOX and non-SOX control frameworks and compliance requirements.
• Coordinate internal and external audits.
• Maintain strong governance, risk management, and control processes.
• Oversee annual fixed asset and inventory counts and bi-annual master data quality reviews.

Treasury & Insurance:

• Coordinate cash management, guarantees, insurance administration, and treasury compliance reporting.
• Act as liaison with shared service treasury teams and financial institutions.

People Leadership:

• Lead, develop, and coach the accounting team.
• Set clear objectives, manage performance, and ensure resource optimization.
• Promote high standards of financial discipline, accuracy, and continuous improvement.

Requirements

Education & Qualifications:

• University degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics.
• CECCAR qualification (Certified Accountant) required.
• ACCA, CIMA, CPA, or equivalent qualification is an advantage or in progress.

Experience:

• Minimum 7 years of leadership experience within accounting functions.
• Strong expertise in Romanian accounting, taxation, VAT, and excise regulations.
• Experience in manufacturing, FMCG, or regulated industries is highly desirable.

Skills:

• Strong leadership, stakeholder management, and influencing skills.
• Advanced analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
• Experience working with SAP, MS Excel, and financial reporting systems.
• Excellent English communication skills.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with senior management, auditors, consultants, and regulatory authorities.
