Job description

OpenStack Engineer (m/w/d)

About the Position

Yorizon GmbH & Co. KG (DE) is seeking a passionate OpenStack Engineer to join our team in Berlin, Germany. This role offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment with a focus on sustainable Green-IT cloud computing solutions.

About Us

As pioneers in sustainable Green-IT cloud computing solutions, we focus on digital sovereignty, security according to European standards, and independence and flexibility through the use of open-source technologies.

Open Source is our DNA: We actively engage in open-source associations, networks, and collaborations to shape open standards and promote Europe's digital sovereignty with innovative IT solutions. Our mission is to support companies of all sizes in accelerating their digital transformation and achieving their business goals through the use of sustainable cloud technologies.

Start-up spirit meets corporate power: Yorizon is a subsidiary of HOCHTIEF. HOCHTIEF is a technically oriented, global infrastructure corporation with leading positions in its core activities of construction, services, and concessions/public-private partnerships (PPP) with a focus in Australia, North America, and Europe. We combine agile pioneering spirit and flat hierarchies with the stability of an international corporation.

Your Area of Responsibility

As part of our DC.Ops team, you will report to the Lead Platform Architect and be responsible for what makes our cloud core: the OpenStack platform. It runs on our own hardware, in our own data centers, with Ceph as the storage backend – and it is just beginning. That means: no legacy landscape, no legacy decisions, no decisions made before your time. You shape the standards with which we roll out every new region.

Your Role:

  • Responsible for OpenStack: You will operate and develop our Control Plane and Compute Nodes further – Nova, Neutron, Cinder, Glance, Keystone, Placement, and the services we add next. You know not only the components but also their interplay.
  • Deployment & Lifecycle: You will reproducibly roll out OpenStack and keep it up to date – deployment tooling like Kolla-Ansible, OpenStack-Ansible, or OSISM, clean upgrade paths across releases, rolling upgrades without downtime for customers.
  • Neutron & Network: Neutron with OVN or Open vSwitch, provider and tenant networks, floating IPs, security groups, load balancing with Octavia – You understand the path a packet actually takes through virtualization.
  • Compute & Scheduling: KVM/libvirt as the foundation, flavor and aggregate design, scheduler and placement behavior, live migration, overcommit strategies, quotas, and multi-tenancy – including GPU passthrough for our AI workloads.
  • Storage Integration: You ensure that Ceph and OpenStack work together seamlessly – RBD for Nova and Cinder, images via Glance, object storage via RGW – and work closely with our Ceph engineer.
  • Deep-Level Debugging: Hanging Nova instances, RabbitMQ under load, Galera clusters with a mind of their own, Neutron agents that no longer report – You go down to the log and kernel level and find the cause instead of the symptom.
  • Automation as Standard: Ansible, Terraform/OpenTofu, GitOps with Flux, CI/CD – what happens twice, happens automated with us. Custom tools in Python or Bash are part of the package.
  • You built it – you run it: With a pronounced hands-on mentality, you accompany new regions from commissioning to stable operation – together with our data center engineers on site.
  • Architecture & Knowledge: You shape architecture, design, and integration decisions, establish standards, and actively share your knowledge in the team – runbooks, troubleshooting guides, pairing.

Requirements

  • OpenStack in Production: You have operated, expanded, and upgraded OpenStack environments in production. Terms like Nova, Neutron, Cinder, Keystone, Placement, Octavia, or Ironic are everyday for you, not theory – and you know from your own experience where the platform hurts in operation.
  • Your Foundation (Linux & Open Source): In-depth Linux knowledge and a strong understanding of data center infrastructures – virtualization with KVM/libvirt, networking, and storage. You are at home on the command line, not in the dashboard.
  • Deployment Tooling: Experience with at least one way to reproducibly roll out OpenStack (e.g., Kolla-Ansible, OpenStack-Ansible, OSISM, TripleO, or your own Ansible-based solution).
  • Storage Understanding: You know how Ceph works under OpenStack and what happens when storage latency suddenly becomes a compute problem. Modern platforms & GitOps: Experience with Kubernetes and modern deployment paradigms like GitOps (ideally with Flux).
  • Infrastructure as Code: Automation is standard for you – Ansible, Terraform/OpenTofu, CI/CD pipelines. Bash or Python for building your own tools is your thing.
  • Analytical Mind: You penetrate complex, highly available, distributed system landscapes and find structured solutions even for tricky problems – even when customer workloads are affected.
  • Communication: You like to work on an equal footing, share your knowledge, and communicate confidently in German and English.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience in the environment of the Sovereign Cloud Stack (SCS) or in other sovereign cloud projects
  • Contributions to the OpenStack community or other open-source projects – code, documentation, bug reports, talks
  • Bare-metal provisioning with Ironic or comparable approaches Experience with GPU workloads, passthrough, or AI infrastructure
  • Knowledge of monitoring and observability of distributed systems (Prometheus, Grafana, Loki)
  • Experience with multi-region or multi-AZ architectures

What We Offer

  • Team Spirit: You will become part of a dynamic, growing team with a real you-culture. We offer you the freedom to actively contribute your talents and shape the future of the company.
  • Career Opportunities: There is no standstill with us. Take advantage of the many advancement opportunities in an expanding environment and benefit from our exciting international perspectives.
  • Remote First: Work-life balance is highly valued. Whether 100% remote from Germany or Austria or hybrid at our locations in Berlin, Augsburg, or Vienna.
  • Your Development: We invest in you. With your own further education budget, you decide which professional or personal skills you want to deepen next.
  • Equipment: To enable you to perform at your best, you will receive the appropriate tools. Choose freely between the latest Apple or Windows devices for your equipment.
  • Purpose: If you would like to engage in voluntary work, we support you in making your contribution to society.

Ready for the Challenge?

Are you passionate about building an OpenStack cloud from scratch – on your own hardware, in your own data centers, and with a team that is just growing together? Then become part of our success story and bring your passion for modern infrastructures to our team. We are looking forward to your application!
